A Clean Glass, Please
I've known for years that she had an obsession with being clean. Antibacterial wipes, hand sanitizer, and safety were her three main priorities in life, but she had a lot of other amazing aspects about her that I couldn't help but find myself lost in. I was forever enchanted by the natural light that glowed around her when she walked into a room. She had a heart of gold and the soul of an adventurer. Truthfully, I'd been in love with her for as many years as I'd known about her cleanliness fixation that conflicted with the tomboy who loved to ride a quad through fresh mud, but I'd never had the courage to say a word. Instead, I just wanted to be her best friend, and hoped that I could keep her as safe as possible in that regard.

Moments Series
A Moment I figure it’s now or never. Three months ago, she walked into my favorite coffee shop and has been here every Saturday since. I know this because I stop in here every Saturday morning after my morning run. After the first time I saw her I made it a point to always be here at the same time. The first day that I saw her I was a sweaty mess, which normally wouldn’t bother me because, well I come in every week for my coffee fix, but this could not be her first impression of me. I couldn’t shake this feeling that everything had to be perfect because this meeting could change everything.

THE FIRST
THE FIRST I can’t believe I’m so nervous. I mean, I’ve had many firsts before in my life and this one ranks no higher or lower than the others. I keep telling myself to GET IT TOGETHER! I’m shaking like a leaf. Is this anticipation or am I having a seizure of some sort??? Regardless, this is ridiculous. Good or bad it will be over before I know it…right?? Ok, a little background about me first:

Take a Chance
I had given up. I had given up on having any sort of social life outside of the constant cycle of work. I had given up drinking, as a way to quit wasting my Saturdays and Sundays with lingering hangovers. This meant that at my ripe age of 32, that there was no way to be social. Living in a small town, the weekly ritual was to finish work and head to the local dive bar for drinks. On second thought, that is not a ritual just for small towns, but seems to be the norm for most Americans after every work week.

The Little Beach House
“I’ve got a hot new girlfriend,” said Larry’s voice on the phone. “We’re planning a little cookout at my beach house. Remember my beach house? You haven’t come out in ages. Anyway, to stay on point: we were planning a cozy little cookout, but her friend decided to invite herself along, and, well, you know the routine. I need a fourth to balance the teeter-totter, so to speak.”

A Special Evening with a Glass of Wine, the Pope, and Blue Cheese Olives.
A Special Evening with Glass of Wine, the Pope, and Blue Cheese Olives. I’ve never been one to believe in blind dates, and yet I put myself out there at a speed dating event. What is speed dating you may ask. It’s where two rows of people face each other, and you literally interview one person and then the next. To say that it’s weird would be putting it mildly, especially when you know right off the back, that there is no match, as in, “How soon will these three minutes pass?” After chatting with ten people, I finally met someone who I found interesting and even cute. We seemed to connect, had a lot in common and at the end of the dating event, we stepped outside of the rules, which were to let the facilitator set up match responses, and exchanged phone numbers directly with each other.

Jolie Laide
At first glance, you see a child walking toward you - and then after a slow realization, you understand that your brain has played tricks on you. In actuality, this is just a very short adult. A four-foot-eleven adult that looks nothing like the photos you've been shown of her on her social media. To call this woman homely would be an insult to the ugliest of humans. The images posted to Facebook are of a smiling brunette with cute and charming angular features prominent cheekbones, lustrous white skin, and stylish clothing. This woman is a far cry from the disheveled, short, squat woman that stands before you now. You observe the chintzy brown hair, pasty complexion, flat features, and prominent double chin. She sports oversized “grandma” glasses, which you imagine to be a bold attempt at making others think she is fashionable and ironic. In actuality, this eyewear is the only feature that helps disguise the plainness of her face, much like a smokescreen.

The Act
The amber-tinted sun was setting as my Merlot colored dress grazed my thighs. He said, “It’s a date.” I re-downloaded another dating app on my phone thinking nothing of it. Here I am again, at another restaurant on a Friday night. Thoughts linger across the echoes of mind as my eyes drift around the dining room anticipating him walking up to my table. Him. Whoever he could be to me. I wonder how differently he’ll look in person once I gaze into his sky blue iris’. Will I get addicted to his musky scent drenching my apartment on a starless night? No. I need to stop getting ahead of myself before this has even started. How many other couples are here excited to be with their loved one? What if I’m about to meet the right person for me. The guy that has the ability to make me feel like I’m the only woman alive. Luckily, the waiter approaches me to break my own tension, “Good evening. My name is Peter. Can I get you something to drink?” I quickly respond without hesitation, “A glass of your best Merlot.” He replies, “Would you prefer something on the drier side or more full-bodied?” I said, “Something more full-bodied to match my dress.” He says, “Of course.”

I want you
"Hello Miss, you're heading to 505 N. Lakeshore Drive correct?" The Uber driver tapped some buttons on his phone to confirm that he had picked up his fare. "Uh, yes that is correct." Kendra stammered while fidgeting with her cell. Why was she nervous? There was absolutely no reason to be nervous. This was dinner with a friend, who offered to get her out of a funk, nothing more than that.

Under The Bridge
3 am…. it’s 3 am and here I am staring at the ceiling. The silence surrounding and consuming the darkness. It feels as though the rest of the world is asleep while I lay on the right-hand side of this admittedly large, empty double bed. I cannot say I was thinking about anything in particular. Nothing of importance had happened in my previous day, I wasn’t having a flashback of a memory from 10 years ago that was causing me to contemplate my life choices. I was just awake.
