I Understand The Outrage

But The Law is The Law

By Janay EaleyPublished 2 years ago 3 min read
Britney Griner, a professional female basketball player

I will be very honest with you: I had no idea who Britney Griner was until she appeared in the media. I don’t watch women’s basketball and the sport in general. I don’t even watch men’s basketball, but I knew more about them than the women. The only sports that I ever watched on television was soccer and tennis. So, when her name was dropping out these news reporters' mouths and photos of her in handcuffs were shown, I was clueless.

I will speak on this situation once and never again. Let’s break down what a LAW is! A law is a set of rules that are created and are enforceable by social or governmental institutions to regulate behavior, with its precise definition a matter of longstanding debate. It has been variously described as a science and as the art of justice. We are Americans and we are living in America which is also known as the West.

Our ideals and beliefs are different to the other countries. Just like in America, there are things that are accepted, things that we can get away with and things that we cannot get away with it. The same goes for Russia. This is why it is important to learn the laws and regulations of the country before you travel there. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I researched the laws of Russia and of course, the first law that popped up what the drug law.

Here is the screenshot of this law: Take a look at the keywords.

The reason why you feel that Britney Griner is being wrongfully incarnated is because you feel that it is not that serious. It's just marijuana. (medication) We take drugs in every point of our lives for headaches, cramps, hair, skin, nails and etc...

You must have understood that to Russia, drugs are drugs. There isn’t any difference.

I mean they are right if you look at in that context. If you can go to jail for something like this, who knows what you can get locked for in Europe, China, Algeria, and I bet you that their laws are stricter. It’s like the airport, if you are in possession of an assault weapon, you can spend at least one year or pay a two thousand and five hundred fine. It can be either one. America might not lock up for a long period of time like Russia, but they throw you in the slammer.

There is even an article that I recently saw where new laws inscribed in Russia where you can be imprisoned for anything whether small or big.

New Laws in Russia: https://www.forbes.com/sites/stuartanderson/2022/07/07/new-laws-in-russia-people-can-be-imprisoned-for-almost-anything/?sh=4a9972152209

I repeat: ANYTHING.

In theory, citizens come to form a society and create laws, while the government implements and enforces those laws. Laws are MEANT to protect the people, or citizens, of society either individually or collectively. Laws exist for five basic reasons, and all of them can be abused. It’s not that hard to comprehend. Russia doesn’t play when it comes to how they run things in their country. It’s either you abide their laws or you will be punished for severely.

It seems as if she has gone to the country with the medical cannibis before since she does plays overseas, and they probably didn’t catch her then but now they have. It’s sad that she has severe chronic back pain, and I cannot imagine how that feels but once again, the law is the law. She might’ve as well have just sat this season or game out. I am just telling you the truth and I am keeping a hundred percent with you guys. I hope the people who read this article are able to see eye to eye with everything that I spoke of.

You make some good points. She went to a country that has a law that she violated. As much as we, in the U.S., may think, it isn't a big deal, it's true that Russia made that a law. You do need to be aware of the laws when you travel. I feel like there was speculation as to if Russia was making a bigger deal about it because they realized she was famous and exploited the situation in order to get something they wanted from the U.S. If that's true, then that's a whole other topic that changes things. But regardless, marijuana is illegal there. So, you can't travel there with marijuana. And maybe, if she can't travel without it, she just shouldn't have a job (her second job, by the way) where she has to travel to that location. I agree with much of what you say, you have to respect the laws! I did feel for her, an awful situation, but that's why you have to be careful of international laws.
