Adesua opens up

By Jide OkonjoPublished 8 months ago 3 min read

Nigerian actresses and best friends Adesua Etomi-Wellington and Jemima Osunde have taken their friendship to the next level, and started a joint business together. That business is called Sanaa Beauty and it is a beauty, cosmetic, and personal care brand. As can be expected, when two people who are known for one thing (acting) decide to go into this kind of business that they are not known for, people get skeptical and want to know if the business is only being done as a cash grab. Well, during the launch of their business, Adesua Etomi and Jemima Osunde opened up about their decision to do Sanaa Beauty, and Adesua explained why for her, the decision is extremely personal and has to do with her own journey with her skin especially after her miscarriage. Here's what Adesua Etomi, and Jemima Osunde, had to say.

Speaking at the Sanaa Beauty event, Adesua responded to the speculation by many that the business is only being done as a cash grab. Adesua said that launching the brand is not about keeping up with the fads but in line with the core values of what they want to achieve, which is radiant and beautiful skin for Africans. According to her, Sanaa means 'a work of art' and it also means 'radiant' and 'beautiful' in Swahili. Speaking about the tough time she herself had and why it was important for her to start the business, Adesua said:

ADESUA ETOMI-WELLINGTON: I believe in doing things because they hold deeper meaning. We are not in it just to make money, we want to create something really special. I really care about the skin of African women because I've had a tough time myself. We know Africans face hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, and so much more, and I was really particular about this because after my miscarriage, my skin unexpectedly went through a tough phase. There were spots everywhere because my hormones were all over the place.

Echoing her thoughts, co-founder Jemima Osunde said:

JEMIMA OSUNDE: These products are not about bleaching people's skin. We wanted a product that would work over time, not one that would change the skin tone. Our core message is self love, and as we are pushing products that are great for your skin, we are also emphasising self love and loving yourself through every season because that's what we are really passionate about. The products are unisex, and we believe that men deserve healthy, glowing skin.
