Nigerian singer Tems is now one of the most popular Afrobeats artistes out of the whole continent. With a slew of hits under her belt and collaborations with some of the world's biggest names including Beyonce and Rihanna, Tems' life is far beyond what most people who have grown up and live in Nigeria expect for themselves. But to dream this big, and aspire this big, we all know that there must be a number of doubters along the way.

Now, during a new interview with Hot 97 FM, Tems is opening up about how most of her family thought she was a failure and didn't like her. She also opens up on how they feel and react now, after her massive glow-up. Here's what Tems said.

Tems during interview

During the interview, Tems was asked "What point in your life did you decide to take music seriously, like this is what you want to do?" She responded saying:

TEMS: So I had a job after I graduated. I had a job. I was trying to be a good girl [laughs]. A good girl is a girl that listens to her parents and gets a job and says okay, I'm trying to make my parents proud by showing them I'm going to get a job, get married, and do the thing. The robot plan. The zombie plan [laughs]. It's a zombie plan and I was on that plan, and then I got signed. The thing is I've been writing music since I was like 11, and I was just like do I want to be here in the next ten years? Is this it? And I was just like nah, I would rather die than remain here.

"Wait, so did your family ever support your singing career?"

TEMS: My mum is always supportive of me. Most of my family was just like "you're crazy". Like, "you are a failure", and "we don't like you". Now, a lot of them can't even speak. I'm sure it's still shocking them till today. Like every time they see me, it's like wow, you're related to me? You did that? Wo! I'm sure they are still in shock.

"Do you hold any hard feelings for anybody that doubted you?"

TEMS: Oh no, no, no. I don't even have time for that. Look at my life, I only have time for joy. Like, I don't even think of them. They are not even on my mind at all. Not a single thought.
