HAPPY WOMEN'S DAY

On this International Women's Day, my wish is for a world where every woman and girl is empowered to reach her full potential and live a life free from discrimination, oppression, and violence. May we continue to work together towards gender equality and the advancement of women's rights, so that all women can realize their dreams and contribute fully to their families, communities, and societies. Happy Women's Day!

WHY WOMEN'S DAY WAS CELEBRATED IN MARCH 8TH?

International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8th every year. The date was chosen to commemorate the women's rights movement and the struggle for women's suffrage, which gained momentum in the early 20th century.

The first National Women's Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, in honor of a garment workers' strike in New York City. The day was designated to raise awareness about the poor working conditions and low wages of women garment workers, and to advocate for women's rights and suffrage.

In 1910, at the International Socialist Women's Conference, Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an International Women's Day to be celebrated annually, in order to promote women's rights and equality worldwide. The conference attendees unanimously agreed to the proposal, and the first International Women's Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

The date was later changed to March 8th in 1913, and has been celebrated on this day ever since. March 8th was chosen because it was already an important day for the women's movement in many countries, as it was the day of several important protests and strikes by women workers.

ABOUT WOMEN'S DAY

  • International Women's Day is a global celebration of women's achievements, contributions, and ongoing struggles for gender equality. Observed annually on March 8th, the day serves as a reminder of the vital role that women play in society and highlights the need for continued efforts to address gender disparities and discrimination.
  • The origins of International Women's Day date back to the early 20th century, when women around the world began to advocate for their rights and suffrage. In 1908, 15,000 women marched through the streets of New York City to demand better pay, shorter working hours, and the right to vote. This event marked the beginning of the women's rights movement and inspired the first National Women's Day in the United States, which was observed on February 28, 1909.
  • In 1910, at the International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen, a proposal was made to establish an annual Women's Day to raise awareness of women's issues and promote gender equality. The proposal was met with unanimous approval and the first International Women's Day was observed in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
  • Since then, International Women's Day has become a global movement with millions of people participating in events, rallies, and marches to celebrate women's achievements and call for greater gender equality. The day also serves as an opportunity to reflect on the challenges and struggles that women continue to face around the world, including discrimination, violence, and economic and political marginalization.
  • The theme for International Women's Day 2023 is "Women Leading the Way: Build Back Better for an Equal Future". This theme highlights the important role that women have played in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to ensure that women are fully included in the global recovery efforts.
  • Women have been at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic, serving as healthcare workers, caregivers, educators, and essential workers. However, the pandemic has also exposed and exacerbated existing inequalities, with women and girls facing disproportionate economic, social, and health impacts.
  • In order to build back better, it is crucial that women are fully included in the decision-making processes and are given equal opportunities to participate in the economy, politics, and society. This requires addressing the root causes of gender inequality, including systemic discrimination, gender stereotypes, and lack of access to education, healthcare, and other resources.
  • International Women's Day is an important reminder of the ongoing struggles for gender equality and the vital role that women play in shaping our world. As we celebrate the achievements of women and call for greater gender equality, let us also recognize the work that still needs to be done to ensure that women's rights are protected and their contributions are fully valued and recognized.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, International Women's Day is a reminder of the important role that women play in society and the ongoing struggles for gender equality. It is a day to celebrate the achievements of women and to call for greater action to address the challenges that women continue to face around the world. As we mark this day, let us commit to building a world where every woman and girl is empowered to reach her full potential and where gender equality is a reality for all. Happy Women's Day!
