"We are not chasing clout"

By Jide OkonjoPublished 16 days ago 3 min read

Nigerian media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu sat down for an interview with one of the panelists on the Honest Bunch podcast, Ezugwu Chukwudi (aka Husband material) to talk about the current podcast craze and how people chase a lot of clout using podcast. During the program, Husband Material got very heated when defending he and his show from being part of the people who chase clout. Here's what he had to say.

Here's how the conversation between Ebuka and Husband Material went:

EBUKA: There's a conversation about podcasts clout chasing. Some people are saying that these podcasts, people are saying the most outlandish and ridiculous things and try to out-ridiculous the last person and get some conversation. When you sit with these people, do you know that these people are chasing clout, and are you guys also using chasing of clout in your favor?

HUSBAND MATERIAL: So, what we do is we have a proper conversation as a team before we say this guest best suits this episode. Now, a lot of people get to see the teasers on social media and that is when people begin to share hot takes. The truth is we actually release multiple teasers, but many of the people that share the teasers are also looking to generate traffic for themselves. And so, they put accompanying caption to the video. They are chasing clout, we are not.

We have had Portable talk about managing success, our most views. We have also had Des Talker, nearly 800,000 views. ID Cabasa, nearly 700,000 views. Dr Olumide Emmanuel, nearly 600,000 views. Helen Paul, nearly 700,000 views. And a lot of these people share great insights. The numbers don't lie. It's not me trying to convince people, the numbers are there for themselves. So, it means that a lot of people saw those episodes.

But the ones that people get to speak about are the ones they see on multiple platforms because even these platforms are looking for traffic. That's why you're going to see posts on certain popular blogs with the caption 'Groom Pours Wine Away on His Wedding Day' and people will come and begin to say this and say that. That is what those people are interested in, and what will generate traffic. But just say for example 'A Need for a Mindshift in Nigerian Politics', you will see 2 comments. So I'm saying some people are taking advantage of that, but not we.
