we cant hide from death - it's all around us - and it's a constant part of life.

we've really only got one chance to experience everything this life has to offer.

The reason we are here.

the reason we have this one chance.

we try to run from death.

we try to slow it down.

we try to convince ourselves it doesn't matter.

we try to make it something it's not.

but we can't.

death is the only way to find our way home.

it is the only way to experience the things this life has to offer.

and so what are we doing? are we the people i know? are we the world we see around us? are we a part of the ground of our lives as people?

i guess maybe?

no, i'm not that ready to go.

i love the people i know.

i love the world i see around me.

i love the life i've been blessed with.

i want to stay here.

i want to experience it all.

i want to see how it goes.

i want to get through the rough parts and still make it to the other side.

i want to get to heaven and be happy about it and know i did everything i was supposed to do.

it might seem crazy to feel that way.

but that's how i feel.

i know i will die.

what then?

i really can't answer that question.

i'm going to try and leave it for when i get there.

i've been here before.

and it was rough.

a lot of memories came flooding back.

i cried.

i hated this.

i felt angry and sad and wanted to be home.

but i wasn't.

i was here.

the pain slowly went away.

i knew it would, and i guess i don't care to go through it again.

i know if i make it through this one, i'll make it through the next one too.

I'm going to try and have fun here, and take advantage of the time i have here.

take in the beauty of this earth.

make memories that will last me a lifetime.

"Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity. My mission has been accomplished. I have done what I wanted to do and I should rest in peace,” Nelson Mandela said.'

Governor Dickson described the late warlord as a hero and a patriot who distinguished himself and his people by their bravery and sacrifice for the restoration of peace to the region after the bloody civil war in the early 70s.

He said as someone who was responsible for the death of several top figures and arms dealers during the civil war, Abacha had his own share of notoriety, as well as that of the late Oronto Douglas, whose wife was killed and his son held for several years in military detention.

Dickson said the presence of the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the funeral service of the ex-Gen was another expression of the bond between the two men.

He said: “Any man of honour will die fighting for the integrity of his people. Our colleagues died in the line of duty to restore peace to their land. They were not like our leader, Magnus Abe, who played politics with the life of his friend and leader, Gen. Alani Akinrinade. It is sad that you could play politics with the life of a man like Akinrinade, who sacrificed his very life to ensure that we achieved peace and unity in this country. You have your share of responsibility in the deaths of my colleagues, not me.

“In fact, your presence at the funeral was an expression of the bond of friendship and mutual respect between me and Asiwaju. I remember when you came to the residence of Chief Adetokunbo Kayode in Abuja at the time the revolution was going on, I saw that one man standing out – Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. That is a comrade. If I had the opportunity, I would love to fight you like a war of attrition. I have no interest in Tinubu's death, but that of our soldiers. It is sad that those of us who were involved in that struggle to free Nigeria have since traded our uniforms for the red cap of politicians.

“I have no interest in your death. But I know that wherever you are, your spirit will be a man of courage and bravery. One thing I want to say is that every comrade who has performed his or her duty to his or her country, particularly in those dark hours, cannot be desirous of dying at the doorstep of his country. I am proud to have known your humble character and the fact that you have served"

“It is a fact that there was no winner in the Civil War and the efforts by those of us who fought against the evil which was unleashed on the country. But we had our triumph in the nation-building that followed. I commend the late General Mohammed Onwuaso-Ikwuanyanwu for initiating the third phase of civil war commemoration with the theme, Restructuring for the Growth and Development of Nigeria, in order to ensure that we address the issues that led to the civil war.”

Asiwaju Tinubu described the slain elder statesman as an exceptional leader who has touched the lives of many Nigerians with his life.

He said it was unfortunate that despite his contributions to the nation, his valiant fight for the country and the death of his wife, Chief Abiola, he was treated with disdain.
