Are you a person who gets into a relationship, and when it gets serious, you end it? Are you stuck in a cycle of date, ditch, and repeat, and it’s been like that ever since?

You might have commitment issues.

It’s not an unusual phenomenon. Many people struggle with maintaining romantic commitments, and each of them has varying reasons for their fear. If you’re one of these people, try to understand your fear of commitment and learn what to do with it before it ruins your life.

Here are a few valid reasons why you are struggling to commit to a relationship:

You’re not ready.

And that’s okay. What’s not okay is leading someone on. Nobody wants to be in a relationship where one person is stepping on the gas pedal while the other is stepping on the brake. That kind of relationship leads nowhere, and usually, the people in it get hurt.

So, if you want to avoid getting hurt or hurting someone, you need to be honest from the beginning. If you want to take things slow, say it without hesitation. And if things suddenly move faster than you expected, don’t be afraid to pull the brakes and tell your partner you want to slow things down.

You need to know that a relationship is not something you enter on a whim. You need to be truly sure that you are equipped to take on the responsibilities and challenges that come with it. So, if you aren’t certain that you are ready, don’t get into one. Else, you’ll end up hurting yourself or your partner.

You’re protecting yourself or the other person.

At first, you might be lovey-dovey. But further down the line, that love turns to annoyance, and annoyance turns to hate. This is the mindset that you have, and this is why you struggle to commit. You’re afraid of getting hurt and hurting someone.

You need to understand that nothing is guaranteed in life. You won’t know for certain if that’s the road your relationship will lead. So, instead of worrying about what the future holds, enjoy the moment you spend with the person.

Nothing good will happen if you are too afraid to open yourself up to possibilities. So, open your heart, be vulnerable. If you’re too cautious, you’ll never find love.

You’re not financially stable.

Relationships are expensive to keep. You have to go on countless dates, buy them gifts, and spend money on gas to see them. This is why a lot of people avoid dating. It’s too costly. Like many other single people, you would rather spend your money on yourself.

But relationships don't have to be that way. You can be with someone without spending a dime. You don’t have to go to a fancy restaurant for dinner nights. You can cook at home. You don’t have to pay for movie tickets for movie nights. You can just rent a DVD and watch it at home. There are a lot of cost-free date ideas you can try. You don’t have to shell out money every time you see and hang out with each other.

As the famous saying goes, “It’s not the destination, but it’s the person you’re with that makes the journey worthwhile.” Though you are not financially stable, it's not something to be ashamed about. There’s bound to be someone out there that doesn’t care about what’s in your bank account.

Don’t Fear Love

Relationships are wonderful. One day you will find that special someone who is meant for you. Until then, learn to open your heart to love and commitment.
