The Thirteenth Turn. Content Warning.
The wind tore at the ornate copper roof of the Beaumont Grand Theater. Snow piled thick against the loading dock doors outside. Inside the main auditorium the temperature had dropped below freezing. Twelve actors huddled in a tight circle on the center stage. The city power grid had failed three hours ago when the blizzard reached its peak. The only light in the massive cavernous room came from a single industrial flashlight resting upright on the dusty floorboards.

Horror Wears a Policeman Uniform. Content Warning.
July 22, 2011. He arrived on Otoka Island before dawn. He'd been there before, so he was familiar with the environment. He was fast and methodical in his movements. He unloaded the heavy gear first, then the survival bags, and finally, the camo outfits. The hardest part was hiding the boat in the bush. Painfully slow. The wind was too strong that morning, and making a fire next to the tent was essential for warmth. He couldn't wait for the sun's rays to appear and blanket the area with sweet heat. His stopwatch indicated a countdown of 14 hours and 34 minutes to zero. Everything was perfectly timed to go according to plan.

The Last Lookout. Content Warning.
The fire tower had no business still standing. It leaned over the tree line like an old drunk, its steel legs sunk crooked into the mountain ridge, one staircase hanging loose where winter storms had ripped bolts free. Every local in the nearest town said the same thing when the girls at the gas station mentioned where they were headed:

This Little Piggy. Winner in Stay a While Challenge. Top Story - May 2026.
Tony read from a Wikipedia page on his phone. "Pig Beach is an island populated by feral, swimming pigs." "Sí señor," their bartender said. "They're friendly, too. Tourists go there to swim with the pigs. Just be careful if you're sailing by yourselves. There are hundreds of islands out here. Easy to get lost."

It was the trip of a lifetime, a family vacation to a tropical island, and I could not contain my exictement as I boarded the plane. The travel agent said it was a Pacific Island, and I was more than ready to retreat, and to get some sun, and relaxation time.

Before We Forgot. Winner in Stay a While Challenge.
Rain tapped against the windshield of Kate’s SUV idling in the parking lot beside the ferry terminal. Beyond them tied to the dock, was a ferry—rust-streaked and name barely legible. It was the only way on or off Aimhreit Island.

The Vow. Content Warning.
The coarse woven bamboo mat scratched against the sensitive soles of his bare feet. Elias kept his gaze angled toward the floor, following the introductory retreat pamphlet instructions. Looking up to make eye contact was a severe violation of trust. Speaking a single word was an absolute expulsion offense. For four entire days this remote valley retreat held its thirty isolated participants in a suffocating bubble of complete quiet. They communicated through the accidental rustle of loose linen garments and the soft padding of bare footsteps on polished wooden boards.
