Under. Runner-Up in Stay a While Challenge.
The gaping rock maw yawned open above her. Its craggy teeth closed around the earthen portal, cutting off the last rays of sunlight like a stone titan biting the sun in half. Valentina gazed longingly up at those teeth. They signaled the only escape route from her worst nightmare.

Shelter. Runner-Up in Stay a While Challenge.
“This was never part of the plan.” The farmhouse loomed in the distance, barely visible through the downpour. Rain dripped down her face as Sophie shivered and looked at the others, pleadingly. All three had resolve written across their faces.

Ah hid jist finished disemboweling oor dinner when I heard the others pull up ootside oor perfect wee getaway. Malcolm and Helena, two halves of oor trio, were mah auldest and dearest pals. I ran tae the door and opened it, geeing them a wave afore headin back tae mah carcass. I grabbed mah Japanese steel cleaver and got tae work separating the head frae the body. I'd scalp the baldy bastid later and then scoop oot the brain for using tae flavour the soup.

New Nacogdoches. Winner in Stay a While Challenge.
Forksdale is behind us, and dusk is falling when we reach the boundary of Lower Nicola, and steer our mounts into the moon-silvered field off the highway's shoulder. I’d passed the 97C turnoff once in the 20’s, cruising home from a forestry gig in Lillooet (this was back when the mines were still coughing up red ore). My brother'd cowboyed for Douglas Lake Ranch, then; I’d stop off to see him on the road home to Kamloops. Tk̓emlúps, where the rivers meet. Like Forksdale, where the rivers fork, but less colonial.

The Pauper
“Edward, look at that view. The ocean’s calmness. Soothing for the soul. What say you, old sport?” Laurence stretches his frail, spiny arms over the wooden beach chair sitting on the pearly white sand. His right arm reaches for a lowball glass where tepid brown liquid sits. The glass touches his wrinkled lips and he sips down the drink. A vacant canopy shadows over Laurence’s sunglass riding pale face.

Because I Can. Content Warning.
I awoke as Connor’s SUV turned onto the long, gravel driveway to the cabin. Jolted awake by the vehicle’s wheels, I sat up to see the surrounding forest as we travelled the final short leg of our destination. Yawning, I stretched as best as I could in the cramped backseat.
