Crash
"The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window." It had been an interesting headline in the newsletter a few weeks ago. One that a person would pause at to read then carry on to the next interesting headline. Being an officer I had just assumed it was some rampant teenager who broke into the place just to mess with people. There had been an older couple about two years back that had lived in the place but they had both been pronounced dead leaving the house vacant. The wife had passed and the husband passed about a month later in his grief according to officer Frank Bennent. He always said it was a pretty gruesome case to handle. I can only imagine what it had to be like. Anytime the newsletter story was brought up his face would become gaunt looking. He would gaze off looking at some hidden traumatic memory playing behind his hard eyes. I would feel sorry for him, no one should have to witness such a tragic sorrow. It really makes one think about their life.

Death
We are surrounded by little deaths. Petals wasting away on arthritic stems. Crippled insects crushed under designer heels. A mangled animal carcass studied by elementary school children. Microscopic fragments from human bodies ringing tubs and dusting shoulders.

“The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It drew the interest of the local teenagers, wondering who’d entered the old place. On the first night, three of them: Tom, Michelle, and Vincent, approached the front yard. But they got spooked and left before going any further. The second night, the three returned to find the candle still lit. They made it to the front door before the sound of footsteps inside the cabin sent them running home. Vincent was terrified enough that he refused to go the third night, but the other two were sure of themselves; they were going to knock on that front door.

“Open the door.” That’s what they want me to do as I stand in front of this mysterious black iron door. Nobody else can open this peculiar door, all except me. Everyone who tried gets electrocuted and dies. We ended up having to bury lots of our family and friends because everyone tried opening it. But these people are still greedy and curious about what’s behind this deadly door. They don’t care if I die, too.
