The Great Owl
Just 30 mintues outside of a pretty busy city was a small town. A small town with a great big tale to tell, or was it a tale at all? Perhaps it was a true tale? I'll let you be the judge.
Conspiracy
Moving under the best of situations is an unpleasant experience. Moving to Alaska because it’s the only place you can get a job is even more unpleasant. You’d think that witness protection means that you can start over anywhere, but when your face was on publications all over the country, there is only so much witness protection can do. So a small town in Alaska is where I ended up. A place you can only get to by small airplane. A place that is in it’s own bubble, separated from the rest of the world. A place that doesn’t get a lot of national publications.

There's a beautiful young woman hovering 20 feet in the air on a broomstick while sobbing quietly out in the driveway; hurling clothing, toiletries, and personal objects out the window of a suburban home and onto the lawn below with telekinesis.

So, now that we have established that Tommy was in fact actually there, that reassured me that I was not going insane. I wondered so many times if it was all in my head. Although I knew my kids heard and saw the things I did, I still did not think that they were catching everything. While with both of my children, I would see, out of the corner of my eye, a small someone peeking around the corner or standing in the hall. I would walk by my room and catch a glimpse of someone peeking out from under my covers as if a child playing peek-a-boo. It was always myself, and myself alone, that noticed these things. Perhaps, it is my motherly instinct to always be aware of my surroundings to protect my children, or my children were always too busy playing. Maybe, just maybe, Tommy made himself noticeable to me alone. He was in fact a child and I a mother.

“Bet you I can hit it on my first try.” “No you can’t.” Ben was wide eye as he looked on in anticipation for me to fire. He had never seen a gun up close so I had to show off a little. I took aimed and fired the shot with out thinking much at what it had been I was so willing to kill. The animal hit the floor as it’s body did a twitch that seem to stem from a reflex that reacted to late.

Mrs. Katherine, could you please tell me what took place the day your husband went missing? “Why Certainly, and please, just Katherine is fine. Would you like somethin to drink?” Oh no, no thank you. Please begin. “The year was 1867, in the crisp days of Fall in October. I fondly remember the wind that blew up there and how it would sweep passed the trees on the mountain side as if it were in a bloomin romance, teasin the leaves tryin to get them to fall for it. I was in my mid-twenties, and still living in the mountains of North Carolina with my husband Thomas. A kind man, with a stone-like expression he seemed to never be able to rid himself of unless he was around me. You would never be able to tell just how good of a man he was unless you knew him like I did. He just wasn’t very good with people ya see.

Hi’iaka. Hi’iaka. Hi’iaka. The faint chant of her name whispered with the wind as it blew through the leaves of the surrounding trees. Dark clouds rolled in and the sky thundered as rain began to pour in a heavy downfall. The pueo lay dead before the boys on the pavement. Bloody and motionless. La’akea shuffled away from it, but Kai’s bare feet were planted in place. His fist still tightly gripped the metal rod he used against the barn owl.

My dog paces around at midnight. I have to keep a close eye out for owls. They’ve been known to swoop to collect small dogs in the area.

“Dave still doesn’t believe me about the night owl’s warning.” I stare at the ceiling of my shrink’s office. She’s scribbles notes on her pad. I asked her once to show me the notes she’d written about me, but she refused. She said it wasn’t beneficial for me to see them while my treatment was still continuing. I wondered if she shared them with Dave. If that was how she convinced him that I still needed the sessions.

The barn owl, displaced from his native home, sat perched on a branch outside a window and watched the creature within. There was a lot of noise in the room, and the owl decided to ignore it. None of the words made sense, nothing formed into a sensible pattern, so it was unimportant. What it witnessed was this strangely-tinted man storm into his room, grab a small box, and flop into his own perch.

CW for blood, death, self-harm, apocalyptic narratives, and the fae being the fae. There is a place, deep in the heart of the woods. There is a wild place, a hungry place. The sun breaks through the leaves in green-gold hush, and when birds sing it shocks the trees and the flowers beneath them. There is a place; you may find me there. Or you may not.
