• Rani Durgavati hailed from the family of the Chandela Rajput king Shalbaham, who ruled the Mahoba kingdom.
• In 1542, she wed Dalpat Shah, the eldest son of King Sangram Shah of the Garha Kingdom. This union strengthened the bonds between the Chandelas and the Rajgonds.

Regency and Leadership:

• When King Dalpat Shah passed away in 1550 CE, their young son, Vir Narayan, ascended the throne. Rani Durgavati stepped forward as the regent during her son’s minority.
• Supported by Diwan Adhar Kayastha and Minister Man Thakur, she skillfully managed the administration, promoting peace, trade, and goodwill throughout her realm.
• She even relocated the capital from Singorgarh fort to Chauragarh fort, a strategically important location on the Satpura hill range.

Defending Gondwana:

• Rani Durgavati faced challenges from both internal and external forces. After the death of Sher Shah Suri, Baz Bahadur captured Malwa and aimed to expand his dominion.
• In 1562, Mughal General Khwaja Abdul Majid Asaf Khan invaded Rani Durgavati’s Gondwana. Undeterred, she chose to defend her kingdom with unwavering resolve.
• The unequal battle unfolded at Narrai, where she confronted the invading Mughal forces. Her motto: “Better to die respectfully than to live a disgraceful life”.

• Rani Durgavati, born on October 5, 1524, in the impregnable fortress of Kalinjar, belonged to the Chandela dynasty of Mahoba.
• Her marriage to Dalpat Shah, son of the Gond King Sangram Shah of Garha-Katanga, solidified an alliance between their royal families.

The Kingdom of Garha-Katanga:

• The small kingdom of Garha-Katanga (later known as Garha-Mandal) emerged in central India after Timur’s invasion in 1398.
• Under King Sangram Shah’s reign, the kingdom expanded to encompass present-day districts in Madhya Pradesh and parts of Chhattisgarh.
• It boasted 52 strategically located forts, nestled amidst dense jungles and hills.

Rani Durgavati’s Leadership:

• After King Dalpat Shah’s demise in 1548, Rani Durgavati took charge as the regent for her minor son, Bir Narayan.
