American actor and military aviator James Maitland Steward was also known as Jimmy Stewart. He had a distinctive drawl and appeared in 80 films from 1935 to 1991. The American Film Institute listed him as the greatest American male actor. In 1980 he received the AFI Life Achievement Award, in 1983 the Kennedy Center Honor, and in 1985 both the Academy Honorary Award and Presidential Medal of Freedom. He died in 1997 at the age of 89.
