My First Reactions of 'Spider-Man' (2002)
If you're new to Vocal and have recently read at least one of my stories, I'm a nostalgic freak. I'm not exaggerating when I say that, because it's true. Let's take a trip back to the year 2002. There was a plethora of pop culture events that we enjoyed during that year: Avril Lavigne's hit "Complicated" was a breakout success, Halle Berry became the first Black actress to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, Ben Affleck was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive, and the infamous breakup of Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears. However, there was one pop culture event that would be the talk of movie buffs everywhere. That event was the release of Spider-Man. Based on the Marvel Comics featuring the titular character, it was released in theaters on May 3, 2002, and produced by Columbia Pictures (now Sony Pictures Entertainment). It starred Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco. The movie follows Peter Parker (Maguire) who gains abilities after being bitten by a spider and becomes Spider-Man. The movie grossed a total of $827 million at the box office. It is now the highest-grossing Sony superhero film. Spider-Man was released in 2024 to honor the 100th anniversary of Columbia Pictures. As of this writing, it has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, proof that it's still relevant in pop culture. May 2027 will mark the 25th anniversary of the film's release. If a re-release of the film next year were to happen, I might wear a Spider-Man suit to mark this special milestone.
