My Review of "Invincible: Season One"

What a heck of a ride! It'll hook you from episode 1!"

Invincible: Season One is one of the biggest surprises for me in 2021. It's a TV series that is exclusive to Amazon Prime. I heard about this show for a little while but didn't actually check it out until the last few weeks of its airing. Boy was I glad I checked it out because I absolutely soaked it all in.

It all starts out innocently enough in the first episode. Our main character Mark is pretty much a normal high school teenager. That's what we start to think until we realize that his dad is Omni-Man. A very powerful superhero that has saved the world more times than anyone can count.

As the son of Omni-Man, Mark is expected to gain super powers as well but he's getting late into his teens and still no powers. That is until closer to the end of the first episode. Mark finally realizes he's gaining super abilities.

At this point we learn that that Mark really looks up to his father and wants to be just as good as him. Obviously he wants to follow in the steps of his father and protect Earth from evil. That is until he realizes it's not as easy as he anticipates it to be.

Meanwhile there are other super beings on the earth. The biggest protectors of the earth are called Guardians of the Globe. Omni-Man basically helps them out occasionally when things get out of hand. Well on the first episode something happens that leads to the deaths of the Guardians of the Globe and even puts Omni-Man on life support.

Much of the episodes afterwards explores this mystery and tries to clue in on what exactly happens. Still, there has to be a Guardians of the Globe to protect Earth from invaders. This is where the Global Defense Agency's Director Cecil goes out to recruit new members. We get a bunch of green teenagers to take over.

Mark wants to follow in his father's footsteps so he doesn't join them but aids them just as Omni-Man did in the past. There's pretty much a huge learning curve for everyone to get adjusted to the new superhero job. As they're learning their job we get introduced to a number of defiant enemies all with their own motives. This was a very clever way of coming up with future story ideas while fleshing out our main characters.

Despite being superheroes these teenagers also have regular teenage lives. They try to keep their superhero identities under wraps so their school lives are basically the polar opposite to their secret lives. Mark is basically trying to win the heart of a girl while being bullied by a school bully.

Speaking of their school I found it hilarious that they called the school Reginald Vel Johnson High School which is the name of the famed actor that played Carl Winslow on Family Matters. They went even further with this joke by naming the principal Mr. Winslow and had the actual actor Reginald Vel Johnson voice the character. I don't know if many people caught that but then again he's not a big star of this generation. So maybe some people overlooked it. I thought it was so funny every time I saw it.

To some people this TV series reminds them of Prime's other exclusive TV series The Boys. I can see those comparisons but this one feels more like an animated superhero version of Breaking Bad at some points. Since it's animated they can go over the top with some of the scenarios that happen in this series.

Speaking of the scenarios this movie can be quite violent. The amount of gore and violence in this show would lead me to warn you from showing this to your kids. It can get quite gruesome and over the top. We're talking Mortal Kombat style of gore scenes.

Still the story was very well paced and intriguing. You always think you know what's going to happen and they put a little curveball in there to throw you off a little. This kind of makes sense as this TV series is based off a comic from the same maker of The Walking Dead series. So you'll kind of know what you're getting yourself into if you know that series.

Overall, I had a heck of a time watching this TV series. I originally never wanted to watch it because I was getting superhero fatigue but this series hooked me from the beginning. If you're looking for some over the top superhero cartoon look no further because it's here on Prime. I have to give this first season a 9 out of 10. I can't wait until the next season comes. They ended this season so well that there are a number of possibilities for the next season.
