My Review of "The Boys: Season 2"

The much anticipated second season of The Boys did not disappoint.

The Boys: Season 2 starts off just where it ended off last season. In the first season Hughie and the rest of the gang are running off as fugitives. Their fearless leader had disappeared to find his estranged wife raising his enemies child. Homelander seemed to be pretty much unstoppable by the end of that season. It was kind of a really bleak ending but yet it still contained so much potential. That's why this cliffhanger worked so well.

This season starts off with so many questions with many answers coming as the season progressed. There are of course a ton of strained relationships that we weren't sure of. Many of which are amended but with some reservations. I liked how they teased us with some of the relationships throughout the season particularly Butcher and his estranged wife and Starlight and Hughie.

There are new storylines that start to pop off from the first season for example the outcome of A-Train and Deep. They're both outcasts in this season and they are both trying to gain redemption. I really liked what they did with the Deep character. It's fun and refreshing as they make light of his tarnished reputation and his redemption.

Throughout the season you question pretty much everyone's intentions except for Hughie. He's probably the only one dimensional character in the series. Everyone else has multiple motives for the things they are doing and want to do. The only thing that did bother me about some of their actions is that some of it was very over the top.

There are many moments where some of the characters would go bizarrely crazy and over the top for certain scenes. Yes it's obvious why they are going over the top but some of it was quite bizarre. They know they're there for a reason yet they're willing to jeopardize everything for their own revenge. It's sort of like that scene in Avengers: Infinity War where Quinn jeopardizes everything because he finds out that Thanos killed Gamora. This wouldn't be a problem with only one character but it seems like there are 3 characters in particular in this series that tend to be like this all the time.

That's not too much of a bad thing to complain about because overall there's more to love about this season than there is to complain. I love the fact that they talk about different social conflicts that we face in our reality. Again they talk about how the media influences the public but this time they go into a different direction with how they influence the public. They created a common enemy for the public to mask the fact that the enemy is facing them everyday and they don't really notice.

I can't help but see the resemblance to real life that this show is trying to emulate. This could be a social commentary of our political climate today and how we should really analyze the content in which we absorb everyday. Of course we should be double thinking anything we hear on the news but this is a good reminder that yes maybe some things on the news aren't quite what they seem and we should really think for ourselves sometimes.

I'm really surprised at how yet again this season was able to implement all of these complicated messages into a very easy to digest story telling. All within 8 episodes too. There is absolutely so much content within these 8 episodes I am astonished as I'm writing back about this season.

Overall, I really liked this season just as I liked the first season. I would say that the second season is pretty on par with the first one. Don't worry about any quality control issues with this series because they have some pretty great writers. I have to give this season an 8 out of 10. It was a really fun ride form start to finish but you really have to see the first season to really understand what's going on.
