7 Video Games that Took on Heavy Issues
Sometimes video games are delightful colors that bop around the screen and amuse. Sometimes video games hit us with incredibly difficult topics that punch us in the gut so hard we have to pause and think about what just happened. While a good video game can be light and fluffy, the thinkers are the one that tend to stay with us day-to-day and influence our thought processes down the road. It can be something as private as a personal struggle or as large as governmental corruption, but at the end of the day, it’s part of what makes gaming so good.
Lynne RushPublished 6 years ago in GamersCan Video Games Make Good Shows or Films?
Video game movies have a pretty rough track record, yet the amazing narratives in games like God of War means that directors are going to keep attempting to bring video game worlds to movies and tv shows. With that in mind, I thought I’d discuss some of my favourite games and game franchises in regards to if they would be as enjoyable to watch as they are to play.
What's So Great About Video Games?
Video game are beloved by millions of people all around the world. So, what makes them so popular? Many believe that video games are damaging to the brain, which to an extent, may be true. But those who love video games use them as a favorite hobby to pass time.
Kelsie TylerPublished 6 years ago in Gamers'Hitman 2's' Potential to Change the Industry
Hitman was a sleeper hit from 2016, but it's not a surprise it flew under the radar. In truth, I don't think I've ever played a game which is this good, with a publisher so determined to ruin it. It seems clear that with Square Enix constantly changing the release plans for the game, to giving the game basically no exposure when it was releasing (hell, I'm a fan of the series and I literally forgot the game was coming out until the game went on sale after all the episodes came out), Square Enix seemed almost dedicated to undermining what is otherwise a rather excellent game. Jim Sterling has a video discussing this here, but now, the tides have changed.

I have been playing video games since I was six years old. My aunt set me up on her Super Nintendo, to get me to leave her and my mom alone. I have been hooked ever since. I would ask to play every time I went to her house, and when I was eight years old my mom bought me a Super Nintendo for my birthday. She took me to the store after school and let me pick out a few games. Since then I have always had a gaming system or two. Right now I have three of my own, and yes I am a girl.

Super Mario is the most recognizable character on the planet earth. That's not a guess or hyperbole. A survey performed in 1990 showed Mario overtaking the former champion, Mickey Mouse. There's not a soul alive who doesn't know who Super Mario is. So it makes sense that everyone in the gaming industry wanted their own Mario, and Sega was one of them. In 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog was released for the Mega Drive and Genesis to great success. For the next three years, Sonic saw a multitude of games, culminating with Sonic & Knuckles, arguably the best of them. A real rivalry was born – plumber vs. hedgehog.
Suspicious CookPublished 6 years ago in GamersVideo Games Are NOT Responsible!
If you have been paying attention to some of the media lately, you will find that people are discussing how video games are responsible for all the school shootings and other gun-related violence. Furthermore, there have been talks of possibly banning video games. I will go ahead and tell you this; Video games are NOT responsible.
Michael HawkinsPublished 6 years ago in GamersWhere Are They? 10 Dead Franchises Due for Another Shot
Hello, and welcome back to Second Chances. Now, normally this column is all about talking about something that deserves another chance to shine, whether movie, album, game, or even vacation spot. However, in light of my first project with Braindamage Games (follow my girlfriend & my studio's progress here), I decided to broaden my scope this time. See, there are plenty of holes in game libraries these days due to established franchises just... stopping. A healthy gamer can't survive on shooters alone. As the studio begins work on something to fill a void left behind by a dead IP, I decided I wanted to take a moment to give my take on dormant franchises that deserve another chance on the sales charts.
Adam WallacePublished 6 years ago in GamersTen Video Games That Mock You for Playing on Easy Mode
Some video games are incredibly difficult. So difficult to the point that sometimes we throw our controllers on the floor in disgust. To add insult to injury, there are some video games that mock you. Whether it's because you died repeatedly, or chose an easier difficulty setting, these games found a way to get under your skin. Although game developers probably used this tactic to encourage gamers to play on a more difficult setting, it can still be demeaning and embarrassing. Here are ten video games that mock you for playing on easy mode.
Claudia JerroPublished 6 years ago in GamersCould 2018 Be the Year Where Video Game Movies Don’t Suck?
Ever since the early 90s, Hollywood has released a multitude of movies based on video games and they have been, for the most part, poorly received. Most of the time it’s usually due to either it’s massive detachment from the source material (i.e. House of The Dead, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li) or maybe it’s just simply terrible (i.e. Max Payne,Assassin’s Creed). The 90s saw a boom of these types of films thanks mostly to the Box Office success of the 1995 film adaptation of Mortal Kombat.
Chris SalazarPublished 6 years ago in GamersPlay Ball?: The Sad State of Sports Games
As one can surmise from my years' worth of writing on the subject, I am a devout gamer. Much like my taste in movies and music, I can find something to like in absolutely every game genre. Even though I love getting wrapped up in an engrossing story or getting thrown into an open world that goes off in every direction, sometimes I just want the simple pleasure that comes from sports competition. Having completed writing my third year's worth of reviews for the "Defunct Games Golf Club" (to be posted beginning this spring), I couldn't help but look at the state of sports video games now compared to the past and be upset.
Adam WallacePublished 6 years ago in GamersThe Current State of Video Games
In the past few years in the video game industry, everything has been about remastering old generation games. Very rarely do we see actually good games that makes us feel great.
