Culture SlatePublished 2 years ago in Futurism'Star Wars' | The Changing Lifespan of the Empire
When A New Hope first came out in 1977, we had no idea how long the Empire had been around. The only information we had was what that episode told us, despite A New Hope’s light-heartedness, occasional campiness, and sense of fun, there is still that dark underbelly typical to George Lucas’s stories. The Emperor dissolves the senate, the Death Star becomes a weapon of significance, Alderaan is destroyed purely as an example – that’s millions, if not billions, of people eradicated as a demonstration. The Empire is absolute, and given the Rebels are a rag-tag group, reliant on recruiting an old Jedi out of exile, and whose entire mission hinges on a farm boy and a mercenary, it seems that the bulk of defiance has been extinguished from the galaxy.

When it comes to iconic figures in the Star Wars universe, it could easily be argued that Boba Fett ranks in the top 10. Despite having very little screen time and hardly any dialogue in the original trilogy, his onscreen look and mystery around him was one of the things that really made him cool. Boba Fett first made his appearance in 1978 in the justifiably maligned Star Wars Holiday Special, in a small animation clip. Initial reactions had been good and George Lucas started making his early plans for Boba Fett in the movies.

It is a duel forty-five years in the making. Considered one of the greatest all-around Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi, aka the Negotiator, led a life directed by duty and commitment. Obi-Wan had to grow into himself. As a young Padawan, he was unsure of his Force abilities and assumed his Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, felt the same way. Kenobi did not seek adventure or excitement. Instead, his anxiety stunted his growth, as did his Master’s frugal doses of praise. Not until his mid-20s did Obi-Wan Kenobi fully reach his potential by defeating Darth Maul and taking on his own Padawan learner, Anakin Skywalker.

While Star Wars, for the most part, is pitched as a franchise suitable for all ages, the series hasn't shied away from showing what a lightsaber can do to a person. In A New Hope, Obi-Wan cut off Ponda Baba's arm during a brief altercation in the Mos Eisely cantina, but that was kind of cool more than anything. It let us know that Obi-Wan was more than a simple hermit. We also had Obi-Wan's death on the Death Star, but that wasn't exactly brutal from a physical standpoint. Vader hit Obi-Wan, then Obi-Wan disappeared. It was more mystical than anything. Well, come the iconic duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back, we got to see what a lightsaber can do when Vader slices off Luke's hand, which visibly goes flying while still clutching his lightsaber. It's a fairly brutal moment.
Culture SlatePublished 2 years ago in FuturismWhy The 2008 'Clone Wars' Movie Is A Good Movie
It is safe to say that almost everybody, if not all, who watched the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series enjoyed it thoroughly - from the profound exposition and humanization of the clone troopers, revelation of a murkier side of the Jedi Order amid the war, and incorporation of numerous engaging story arcs, it is rather hard to imagine that the series had a controversially rocky start in the form of the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie, a production that garnered only 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, despite its flaws and well-justified criticism, The Clone Wars movie certainly has its merits and is holistically a good movie.
Culture SlatePublished 2 years ago in FuturismHow The Lightsaber Was 'Forged'
Star Wars fans know the in-universe process of how a lightsaber is forged. A Jedi finds a kyber crystal and uses it to construct their own lightsaber. In the old days, Jedi younglings would go through a rite of passage called “The Gathering,” where they would obtain the kyber crystal after facing their deepest fears and insecurities. After the fall of the Republic and the Jedi Order, the process was less formal and less refined. Although, the kyber crystal remains the core of the “elegant weapon for a more civilized age.”
