New LEGO Set Based On Another Iconic 'Star Wars' Scene From The Original Trilogy Revealed

LEGO is releasing a new set inspired by one of the most memorable moments from A New Hope (1977). This 802-piece Death Star Trash Compactor Set ($90) is based on the trash compactor scene known for its suspenseful action and for illustrating Leia's bravery, fearlessness, and leadership. Indeed, in this scene, we find the main characters Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) trapped in the trash compactor after the latter used a blaster to create a passage into that smelly room full of trash. Little did they know, it is also the home of a slimy tentacled monster called Dianoga.

It is interesting to see how this LEGO set recreates the essence of the stressful trash compactor scene by having a front/back dynamic, recreating every detail possible. From the front, we see the mini-figures of the four main characters submerged in the pile of trash inside a room composed of a sealed door and three walls. Like in the movie, two of the walls are movable. From the back, we see C-3PO and R2-D2, racing against time to prevent these closing walls from squeezing their mates to death. To top it off, the set includes a detachable plaque bearing Han Solo's famous line from that scene ("One thing's for sure. We're all gonna be a lot thinner.").

Along with the trash compactor set, LEGO is releasing two other new sets from the franchise that recreate Luke's Death Star Trench Run ($60), and Dagobah Jedi Training ($80) from A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, respectively. 

These LEGO sets are part of the Diorama series and are labeled for 18+ due to the complexity of the builds. Each model comes with a printed plaque with a famous phrase from their respective movie scene. All sets are currently available for pre-order and will be shipped out on their release date on April 26.

More products related to the original trilogy are also available on LEGO's website. There is the 4784-piece Imperial Star Destroyer Devastator set ($700), released in 2019, that is 17 inches tall and 43 inches long when fully built. You can also find the 2314-piece R2-D2 set ($200), named after our beloved robot which made his first on-screen appearance in A New Hope.

Naturally, LEGO is involved in the marketing of more recent Star Wars projects such as The Mandalorian (2019) and The Book of Boba Fett (2021)as seen in the many figures and sets released to celebrate these shows. There is the Boba Fett's Throne Room ($100), the new 419-piece Mandalorian's N-1 Starfighter set ($60), and other products like the Ashoka Tano set ($10).

Of course, let's not forget that Obi-Wan Kenobi will be streaming on Disney+ on May 25 and we can only speculate on what LEGO is planning for the release of this series. We still don't know much about this show as we were only given a teaser trailer and two posters, one of which shows off a battle between Darth Vader and his former master and friend. One thing is for sure, minifigures are popular LEGO products, so we can expect new minifigures of characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), Tia (Indira Varma), or the Grand Inquisitor (Rupert Friend). As for this teased battle between Obi-Wan Kenobi and his former best friend-turned-evil-Sith-Lord Darth Vader, we can only hope that LEGO decides to put together a set recreating “the rematch of the century.’
