Santa Anna

memories of rain

By Tonya R. MoorePublished 7 months ago Updated 7 months ago 1 min read
Top Story - June 2023

In the country, we collected rainwater in metal drums. We’d cover them with squares of aluminum weighed down with stones. We kept five drums in the backyard where someone had planted yams and bananas, among other things. I feared the banana trees, suspecting that at their roots where it was cold and dark, fat slugs were always lurking.

I’d stand there, naked toes curling into red earth. I’d uncover one of the drums and dip a long ladle into the wet, inhaling the deep scent of Santa Anna mingled with silt-laden rainwater secretively bearing all the mysteries of the universe.

Stunning. I love the juxtaposition of the banana trees that you fear—the banana trees, whose roots, laden with slugs, also need water to grow—with the wisdom of the water. Congratulations on the win; it's well-deserved!

As a fellow Jamaican country bumpkin, I feel our roots in the toes dug into red earth and the water barrels of time gone by. Nostalgia and memories of possibilities abound. Short and sweet story. Congrats on the win.

Hmmm... this feels more like a confession than a micro, but it has a heavy immersion aspect. It brings up feelings of nostalgia, even if the memories are someone else's. Some people might read it and think of "humble beginnings." Yet, as this is the complete story it is just "humble."
