His Desire
He stared at her, surprisingly amused by the fact that he could sense no fear from her. He licked his lips as he took in the smoothness of her skin and the darkness of her curls. As she looked up, he peered into her sapphire-blue eyes, intrigued by the fact that she seemed to notice his presence. A slow, chilling smile spread across his lips. “How beautiful,” he breathed with sickening sweetness.

Her Concern
She had come to the edge of the valley where an asperous fortress of rock stood before her. No one else dared come here, and perhaps that is why she felt so at peace in such an ominous part of the valley. “It is oddly quiet. More quiet than usual.” She whispered as she realized that there was no howling or grumbling from the terrifying creatures that ruled these walls. She was puzzled, and a bit unsettled by this. As she looked up into the deepening mist of the valley, an electrifying chill pulsed through her veins.

Her Solitude
She walked out the front door of her cabin and stepped into the cold, gray air. She took this lonesome walk every “night”. Though in such a place as this, there is no night. There is no day. Only a gray mist haunting the air. This was her time. Her moment to truly be alone and go where she felt most comfortable outside the pages of a book. Away from her sister and the village people she had nothing in common with, she could be her full self. She understood she didn’t belong with them. Or with people in general.

His Search
His eyes glowed as he watched the village from atop the staggering precipice of the valley. With what he was, he had no problem seeing through the insufferable mist; nor had he any fear of the deadly creatures living in the caverns of the valley wall. In fact, they feared him. Finally, his time had come. He found what he had been looking for, in the perfect hiding place of course. It had taken a little over two decades. It may prove to be more of a challenge once he set foot on the village ground. He doubted it.

Breaking Curfew
High pitched sirens fill the alley as a sentinel cruiser whizzes by. My back clings to the wall, desperate to stay in the shadows. My chest tightens and my palms become clammy as the low hum of a drone gets closer. My breaths come hard and fast. A numbing tingle rises through my arm. I must keep calm. Closing my eyes, I take a deep breath. Focus. Everything becomes quiet. Time is still. The drone passes over. My eyes flick open. I move swiftly, keeping out of the blue light of the Twin Moons. I imagine Ulari waiting for me.

A Twist of Fate
Sitting on the warm seat of the toilet staring at the white wall in front of me with glazed eyes. Loud beeping snaps me out of my trance. A pink plus sign stares back at me. My heart plummets. A lump forms in my throat as silent tears cascade down my face. This tiny stick has just determined my fate.

The Journey Begins
The stone house has been my home for the past year; now abandoned in the darkness of night. Maybe that’s how I feel. It’s the only home I’ve ever known. Standing alone on the hill, far away from everything else, yet willing to let anyone in. Just like her.
