Eric is the first-ever winner of MasterChef Canada, and Alvin is a self-taught chef to hold multiple Michelin stars. Together, they opened R(Rebel Eric) & D( Demon Alvin). Think traditional Chinese on a hipster twist when it comes to R&D. s

Popular items include housemade CSB, Whole-Roasted Pecking Duck, Lobster Chow Mein, and General Sanders' Chicken.

R & D puts a strong focus on Asian flavors, especially when it comes to drinks. They've got various trendy cocktails such as Buddha's Secret Passion, the Sixth Spice, and So Fresh So Clean. For dessert, try the fabulous pandan cheesecake in a glass.

R&D's open kitchen with high ceilings and wooden beams allows you to watch the magic happen from up close. Cool music plays in the background. The décor with the mason jars and the teapots are a nice touch. There is a variety of Eric's trinkets behind the bar and a picture of Chef Alvin in the front.

Eric personally comes to greet you and explain each dish. You'll even be surprised to know that the pecking duck takes three days to prepare! Makes you appreciate the meal more, right?! The restaurant looks spacious as there are separate bar and table seatings.

As for the prices, R&D is more on the expensive side. But the quality of the food, ambiance, and the overall experience is worth it. While you're there, you may also visit the Toronto Music Garden.

When chef Alem Mola moved from Ethiopia to Canada, she had no background in cooking. She learned cooking by watching her aunt make classic Ethiopian dishes. Her curiosity and attention to detail, paired with her innovative approach, later led her to add her twist to the traditional Ethiopian cuisine. It was her business partner Kassa Zalek who encouraged her to open her restaurant on 360 Queen St. Today, she is the co-owner and chef of Toronto's first authentic Ethiopian restaurant.

To get a grasp of hearty homemade Ethiopian delicacies, try the king Solomon platter, the iconic beyainatu, the chacha, doré Tibbs, Wotageba, and Kikil. If you're gluten intolerant, they have fresh teff injera. Unlike some Ethiopian restos, there's no fatty and salty food here, only smokey, almost earthy flavors with no overpowering spices. Speaking of that, Alem imports all the spices, even the injera, and coffee from Addis Ababa. You should order the coffee first since it takes 20 minutes to make from scratch, and boy, the smoky aroma that fills the entire place, sends you into a celestial frenzy.

The interior is homey and welcoming. The red table cloths and curtains further complement the woodsy, warm bricks on the walls. The big windows in the front are great for people watching. There's a large patio at the back.

The staff welcomes you with a kind smile upon entering and explains all the dishes in detail. The owner will have a chat with you and gives you a few suggestions to try. Modern Ethiopian music playing mildly in the background only adds to the laid-back atmosphere. The traditional Ethiopian way to eat is without any cutleries, and this place is no exception, but if you don't know how to, the knowledgeable and kind waiters show you.

The portions are more than satisfying, so if you can't finish your meal, they will pack it for you.

You can take the Queen's subway station to get here. You can visit St. Paul's Basilica church and Enoch Turner Schoolhouse Museum or take a hike in Waterfront Trail while you're in the neighborhood.
