The Top 5 Most Popular Ice Cream Flavors
According to a U.S. survey and my thoughts on each one
With the weather here on the U.S. east coast and else where around the world reaching near 100 ℉ degrees and higher, many of us have been thinking of ways to cool down and stay safe from the heat whether its staying in the A/C or spending the day at the pool. I know parts of Europe have been brutal with the heat.
One popular way to cool off is by enjoying some ice cream. Whether in a cone or dish, those who enjoy the creamy ice cold treat have a favorite flavor. Mine, for instance, happens to be mint chocolate chip.
Its close to 90 ℉ degrees here and the noticeable climb in temperature got me thinking about ice cream. And this got me thinking of this story idea of the top favorite ice cream flavors in the U.S.
Here are my thoughts on each one:
(These flavors reflect the most recent survey done in 2024)
1. Vanilla
This ranking really surprised me! The top favorite ice cream flavor (38% that voted) is vanilla?! My initial reaction was vanilla ice cream sounds so boring! And then I thought more about the ice cream flavor. The simplicity of vanilla makes it so easy to accommodate or just enjoy as is. Want to enjoy your vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, caramel, cookie or candy pieces? Go for it! Toppings of all kinds blend well with vanilla ice cream.
2. Chocolate
Okay, this one didn’t surprise me at all. With 32% of the vote, I figured chocolate would be in the top five. I’m a chocolate ice cream fan. If I’m not getting mint chocolate chip ice cream, I’m usually getting some ice cream flavor that has at least some chocolate ice cream in it. If I’m really craving chocolate, I might be adventurous and get a scoop of “death by chocolate” which is basically a triple whammy of chocolate: chocolate ice cream, chocolate chips or brownie pieces (or both!) and hot fudge or chocolate syrup.
3. Strawberry
This flavor is almost as simple as vanilla and its ranking in the top five at 25% of the vote made me smile. Humble strawberry! The best kind of strawberry ice cream is the kind with pieces of strawberry throughout.
4. Butter pecan
Believe it or not, I’ve never really had butter pecan. I’m really not a fan of nuts in ice cream (I’m not allergic) but rather picky. Sometimes, I’ll order ice cream with nuts in it (rocky road’s good!), other times, I’d rather not. I think I’d actually enjoy butter pecan and next time I’m out for ice cream, I just might have to get a scoop of it!
5. Cookie dough
This would have to be my second or maybe third favorite ice cream flavor. Big chunks of chocolate chip cookie dough blended throughout vanilla ice cream and swirled with chocolate chips? Yum!
I always found it mildly disappointing when I’d run out of cookie dough pieces before the ice cream was gone and then to my delight, I’d find one more glob of cookie dough my spoon missed.
It should be noted that butter pecan and cookie dough were a close call with both getting 21% of the vote.
Here is the latest ice cream flavor I had. Fluffer nutter. I heard how popular it was so I had to try. The peanut butter ice cream swirled with marshmallow creme did not disappoint! I would definitely get it again!

What are your favorite ice cream flavors? Is it vanilla that reigns supreme? Chocolate? Or something far more unique like blue moon (vanilla, almond, citrus, and marshmallow) or orange pineapple?
Fun fact! National ice cream day in the U.S. is Sunday, July 19, 2026.
Celebrate by treating yourself to your favorite ice cream flavor!
