Pineapple On Pizza?

The eternal debate

Is Pineapple on Pizza a sin?

Of all the places to have a debate about Pineapple on Pizza, you'd never expect it on the social business platform LinkedIn would you? Well that's what happened.

I just made a casual post about enjoying pineapple on pizza, as you do now and again, and the post just blew up. Before I knew it there were over four thousand views and over a hundred comments. People love it. People despise it.

Because I'm an advocate of the sweet and juicy combo, I decided it would only be fitting to FLAME those who don't like it, because they are WRONG! (Of course, this is just a bit of fun and the best diss track about pineapple ever written. They're still gravely misguided about it not belonging there though)

Sign Of The Times

All this pineapple malarkey got me thinking about how privileged we can be as a society. It's a pretty amazing time to be alive when people can argue about fruit on the internet. One upon a time it would've been in the street, but probably about something more pressing like food shortages, Stalin, or how much overtime you need to do to bring home the bacon. Nowadays we're talking about Tesla, politics that we don't fully understand, body image, feminism, veganism, global warming, and pineapple on pizza.

The modern world is a pretty weird place to be, and I'm sure it's only gonna get weirder, but for me, as a creative, it's the best time to be creating. The things available to us now, the vast number of creative tools and outlets to express that desire to create, are unprecedented. The Mayans were right. They said around this time you'd only need to think of something you wanted, even if it was from the far reaches of the imagination, and it wouldn't be long before it would be available.

The advancements we're seeing are so rapid it's hard to keep up sometimes, but the one constant, the one thing keeping things real, is how pineapple belongs on a pizza. One of the people I flame-grilled in the tune says it should be replaced with Mango. Apparently, it has the texture of pepper when it's cooked. Now unlike the folk who vehemently oppose the existence of our spiky, yellowy-orange juice lord on that melted cheese and tomato feast, I'm quite open to trying a bit of mango on a pizza.

I feel the biggest takeaway for me from all this debating is the fact people oppose the strangest things. There's no shame in admitting you like it on pizza, but the strong opinion of it being AWAY from pizza is astounding. It's often so strong in fact, people have thrown away years of friendship. Battled in the quagmires of Pizza Rules, changed orders just because of opinion, and even started support groups to help with the trauma of some pineapple accidentally slipping onto your 12" Pepperoni and Mushroom.

I'm sure it's a first. Coupled with the fact it features the LinkedIn members who don't like it, I'm guessing it's a winner. Nobody has complained (yet) who I put into the song and into the video, and it's only received praise so it's either:

  • a) Made them realise they're wrong or
  • b) Give them some insight into why it's allowed and loved by many

There's a great war we cannot see. It's about pineapple on pizza. Ridiculous. I wonder how many other invisible wars of the modern age we can't see? Best toilet tissue? Crocs are cool? Most favourable celebrity? My car's bigger than yours but I'm gonna brag about it on Instagram?

You can decide that. Do you like Pineapple on Pizza?
