People like to tell you that Halloween is the best holiday for anyone with a sweet tooth. But there is one small problem with Halloween. You're limited to candy only.

November comes around, and people get excited for Thanksgiving. You don't have to keep munching on leftover Halloween candy anymore! Now, you can have pumpkin rolls and so many different pies. I, myself, got into making pecan pie this year, and it ended up being a hit!

But the holiday people forget about when getting sweet treats is one that's overshadowed by presents. It's a holiday that leaves people more divided as the years grow. I'm talking about Christmas.

The sweets you'll enjoy on Christmas

We get our regular share of candy on Christmas. We can still have our pumpkin rolls and pies like we would on Thanksgiving! And then we add more! So much more!

Christmas is the time of year everyone gets creative with their cookie recipes! We can see the classic chocolate chip, but we also see snickerdoodles and gingerbread. We watch the more adventurous create popcorn balls, peanut butter and chocolate bonbons, and fudge.

It's one of the few times a year people stock up on chocolate kisses to place on top of their cookies! Cookie bars, lemon bars, and Mississippi mud cakes lay around as far as the eye can see.

But there's one cookie out there that puts the rest of these Christmas cookies to shame. One cookie that makes you question if it's really Christmas unless you have it. That cookie is the sour cream sugar cookie. And one bite will make you feel like it's Christmas again.

A childhood classic turns into a Christmas staple

Some of my favorite childhood memories revolved around baking with my mom. Christmas became the best time of year for baking. My brother, sister, and I would help where we could. But we all waited for frosting the sour cream sugar cookies!

Every year my brother, sister, and I picked one color each. Then, with our bowl of frosting, we'd spread our frosting on every cookie we can. Then my mom would bring out sprinkles, and we'd sprinkle each cookie.

This year, I'm not sure I'll get the cookies this year, so I want to try to make them myself. December in Michigan can be unpredictable when it comes to the weather. I can't expect my mom to show up with cookies if it's a massive snowstorm.

How to make sour cream sugar cookies

I thought it'd be a complicated recipe, but it's not. As long as you mix everything in the order I list it, you'll have fantastic batch of cookies.

  • 1 cup of shortening
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups of sour cream
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla
  • 5.5 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder

After you mix everything, you need to let it stand. Depending on your schedule, you can let the dough stand for an hour or overnight. When you're ready, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease the cookie sheet and use a rounded teaspoon to get the cookies on the sheet. Bake for seven minutes.

Don't be discouraged if it doesn't look ready yet. My mom's oven needs to be set to 375 degrees to bake. If you're not sure if it's done, test it with a toothpick to be sure.

Of course, no sugar cookie's complete without frosting! While the dough stands, or the cookies bake, here is the frosting recipe, too!

  • 1 pound of sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup of Oleo
  • 1 Large package of cream cheese
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Of course, you can color all the frosting with food coloring. Make sure everything is mixed well, and you'll have a decent batch of frosting once the freshly baked cookies cool!

When the last bits of cookies are out of the oven, and the last one gets frosted, take a bite of one. You'll be happy you added this recipe to your collection.
