With the increasing variety available in UK supermarkets nowadays, it can become increasingly difficult to find a product that is suitable for you and that you like. This is a major problem for people with allergies and food intolerances as well as they have to check the ingredients of everything they buy and consume. The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that all products have to put a label on their products which state “May contain ________ or Produced in a factory which uses ______. This is a legal requirement to mention these labels on products even if they don't have that particular allergen to cover them legally in case anything happens.

People with allergies can also suffer from anaphylaxis. This is a severe and often sudden allergic reaction. It can occur when someone with allergies is exposed to something they are allergic to (known as an allergen). Reactions usually begin within minutes and rapidly progress but can occur up to 2-3 hours later.

Anaphylaxis is potentially life-threatening, and always requires an immediate emergency response.

Some restaurants often have allergy menus which list all the allergens that are in particular dishes to ensure that someone with an allergy is able to go out and have a meal with family and friends, however others don't have such measures and are unable to guarantee nut free dishes. This means that a group of people or family will have to be turned away at the door because a restaurant does not have the facilities in place to cater for people with allergies. This can lead to people feeling alienated and alone.

The Anaphylaxis Campaign is the only UK wide charity focused on supporting those at risk of severe allergies. They have been providing information and support to patients and their families for over 25 years.

Their ultimate aim is to create a safe environment for all people with allergies by working with and educating the food industry, schools, pre-schools, colleges, health professionals and other key audiences. Our focus is on medical facts, food labelling, risk reduction and allergen management.

People with allergies usually have to carry round an Epipen or other similar device to inject themselves and calm their symptoms down to potentially save their life.

To use an Epipen:

Remove the blue safety cap

Jab the orange tip firmly in to the outer thigh. Hold in place for three seconds.

Remove the trainer pen

Well that problem could be coming to an end soon for chocolate lovers with the launch of a new chocolate brand which is said to be completely allergen free.

It all began with Chris, a determined man with food intolerances on a mission to open up the pure joy of eating chocolate to as many people as possible. After months experimenting in the kitchen, he finally made a chocolate bar his body would accept, and that tasted amazing.

Four years on, Chris and wife Steph still get a kick out of seeing the smile on people’s faces when they tell them that the great taste they are experiencing, is not only created by a few, pure, natural ingredients, but is also: Raw, organic, vegan and free from: dairy, gluten, soya, nuts and refined sugars.

They offer single bars, buttons, fudge, boxes of chocolate, drinking chocolate or boxes of twelve bars.

With people with allergies often having to be given Epipen and taken to hospital, do you think that the UK is taking the right steps to support people with such conditions?
