MasterChef Canada: Season 6 had some pretty big shoes to fill. Season 5 seemed like the levels of the home cooks was coming back up again. I was a little disappointed with season 4 and season 5 kind of got my hopes back up. It was a bit of a surprise that they'd have such a child prodigy come into the MasterChef kitchen and clean out the competition.

In season 6 they of course changed things up again. They started off differently. I missed to opening of season 5 where the judges would come to the doors of the potential contestants and surprise them with their invitation to the show. This season they wrote potential contestants a personalized letter that would be delivered by nameless employees of the show. Although it was nice that each of the three judges got to personally handpick specific contestants that they would like on the show. The personal touch of having the judge meet with the contestants was lost. That's a little bummer because I loved the reactions on the contestants' faces when they saw the judges.

To get into the show they did switch it up. Each of the potential contestants that were handpicked by the judges would be coached by the judge that picked them. They would all cook as a group to impress the other two judges that didn't pick them. Once selected by the other two judges they would be able to continue on with the show. This was a nice little twist.

This season they had a few memorable faces that had pretty interesting personalities. Right from the get go I was rooting for Cryssi. She quit her job in order to be on the show. She was a major underdog throughout the show but she really showed her chops throughout the competition. I really loved her tenacity. She wouldn't give up no matter what. You could tell that this show meant a lot to her.

Although this season it seemed like the home cook selection was very talented. Each of the contestants were very talented. I was pretty impressed with this season's group right from the very beginning. As they continued throughout the competition they would all seem to get increasingly better. That's not to say they didn't have their faults. I haven't ever seen so many team competitions where the judges really had to save the contestants' butts. That was really embarrassing for this season's group of contestants.

Still I really thought this group had a lot of talent especially Andre and Jennifer. Andre has an incredible taste palette to create pretty incredible dishes. Jennifer on the other hand is fantastically creative. Last season they had Eugene who was kind of the art cook but it didn't really work out for him because of his time management. Jennifer was putting up art pieces in her dishes. She would have a story or interesting concept that would wow everyone because her work was so original.

In fact I think this season had probably the most creative contestants of all the seasons of MasterChef Canada that I've ever seen. All of their work was really well done and very original.

This season I didn't feel they had any safe situations for the contestants. It seemed as though they would have to cook in every episode and even winning box challenges would have them cooking in the elimination round. This may have made each of the cooks that much better after each episode.

They of course had a bring back eliminated contestants episode. This one was a big one. They had two people partially eliminated in one of the episodes and the next episode they brought back two contestants that were already eliminated. In that one episode all 4 of those contestants would cook in multiple elimination rounds until there was one cook left to claim the remaining spot on the show. It was pretty intense and I think they should have this set up again in the next season.

Overall, I thought the programming of this season of MasterChef Canada was better than last season and the contestants were even stronger. They didn't have to have too many gimmicks in this season. It was just a straight up challenge to see who was the most creative and skillful cooks. I have to give this season a 8 out of 10. I thought it was really well done and the final episode is something to be witnessed. Very good season.
