The world seems, nowadays, to run on coffee and is the go-to drink for people who are either trying to simply wake up in the morning, get their last-minute tasks handed in or simply want to savour a cup of this black gold for the fragrant aroma it offers.

Regardless of what you may personally be using coffee for if at all, the bottom-line remains that it is heavily consumed and therefore can be enjoyed no matter where you are in the world in a variety of delicious forms.

The forms of coffee etiquette

If you are an entry-level enthusiast into the coffee culture, your routine may revolve around putting a bunch of coffee grounds into a run of the mill coffee maker until the slow drip of coffee seeps through to the pot. However, when it comes to certain aficionados and even certain nations, coffee is more of a cultural identity that is treated with a certain level of respect and has etiquettes that are expected to be followed by the barista’s as well as the customers.

This is believed to enhance the experience of the coffee as well as the overall flavour. For example, if you were in Italy, you are likely to be bombarded with an array of protocols for the consumption of coffee. However, if you are in a café in Dubai such as the Nomad Day Bar, you are still likely to be able to enjoy a delicious coffee as well.

How to serve coffee at a bar

For the most part, when it comes to coffee being served at a bar, the drink is expected to be served in a small espresso cup according to proper etiquette. Additionally, in line with proper serving etiquette, the cup should be placed on a saucer along with a teaspoon and then placed on the right-hand side of the customer with the handle facing him or her.

There are also certain protocols such as the angle at which the handle of the cup should be placed to make the drinking experience easier for the customer as well.

Furthermore, when it comes to serving small items to eat such as cakes or biscuits, they should be placed on another small plate on the customer’s left-hand side while the milk should simply be placed on the counter.

Serving coffee at home

It is believed that when hosting guests at home, the host must serve the coffee for the day. The process will be quite similar to the methods mentioned above, however, it is also required that the cups of coffee are never served one by one and instead placed on the table on a tray altogether.

When the coffee is being served, it should be served directly from the coffee maker if it looks presentable, if not a coffee pot should be used.

How to drink coffee

Whether you are at a bar, restaurant or simply at a home, there are several rules of coffee etiquette that need to be abided by. It ranges from simple matters such as ensuring that the cup is never separated from the saucer to the best way to sugar coffee correctly.

In terms of adding sugar to coffee, the best etiquette is believed to be moving the spoon from top to bottom as opposed to swirling your spoon in a circular motion. It is believed that doing so will ensure that the foam at the top of the coffee will not be affected.

It is also stated that you must never raise the teaspoon to your mouth or leave it inside the cup.
