Baked ziti is classic American comfort food. This recipe does not require many ingredients, and it is easy to make. It is usually made with ground beef, but you can use other meats, such as chicken, turkey, or venison. I used venison this time since I had plenty on hand. It is also made with ziti pasta, red sauce, ricotta cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, and shredded mozzarella cheese.

Baked Venison Ziti Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 pounds of venison, ground
  • 12 ounces of uncooked ziti
  • 36 ounces of your favorite spaghetti sauce
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 15 ounces of ricotta cheese
  • 3.5 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese (1.5 cups reserved for the top)
  • 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese

Getting It Done:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Cook the ground venison in a large skillet over high heat until it is done. This should take about 7 minutes. Scramble and break it up as it fries. Then drain the grease if needed.
  3. Stir the spaghetti sauce in with the ground venison and let it simmer while the pasta is cooking.
  4. Follow the directions on the package for cooking the pasta, but don't cook it all the way through. Cut it short by a couple of minutes because you will be baking it in the oven, and you do not want overcooked pasta.
  5. In a large bowl, beat 2 eggs and then add the ricotta cheese, 2 cups of mozzarella, and a 1/2 cup of parmesan cheese.
  6. Drain the pasta and add it to the cheese and egg mixture. Then add in the meat sauce and gently fold until combined.
  7. Pour it into a 9"x13" pan or casserole dish. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  8. Remove the pan from the oven. Sprinkle the rest of the mozzarella cheese over the baked ziti and put it back in the oven. Bake it just long enough for the cheese to melt, which should be about 5 minutes.
  9. Let it stand for about 10-15 minutes. Cut into 8 square pieces and serve.

Baked Venison Ziti goes great with garlic bread and salad. It's even wonderful as leftovers.

Reheating Directions

Remove the dish from the refrigerator 60 minutes in advance. Cut the ziti into squares to allow the center to heat without overcooking the edges. Preheat the oven to 350°F and cover the dish with foil. Reheat for about 20 minutes or until heated well. The temperature in the middle should be at least 165°F.
