True Crime

The murder case that shook a Colombian family in 2019 was clarified after almost five years; the authorities determined that the perpetrator was the same woman who called to report the young woman’s death in USA.

According to the judicial report, it is Yvonne Serrano, of Panamanian origin, who was found guilty of the second-degree murder of Daniela Tabares Maya, as the victim was identified.

In addition, it was determined that the aggressor tried to manipulate evidence of the event that occurred on November 23, 2019, because it was verified that she washed the shirt she had worn that night so as not to leave any trace of the attack and, in addition, deleted images from the security cameras of her house before contacting the authorities.

In the same way, it was established that the crime was recorded after both women spent a night of “fun” in which they consumed alcohol in Coral Springs, Florida, because they were friends, since they met at the gym where the two were training.

The jury confirmed in the middle of the hearing that the evidence shows that the accused shot Tabares Maya, of Colombian origin and 21 years old, in the head, a fact that ended her life at the scene of the events.

The prosecutors of the case were in charge of the presentation of evidence that proved Serrano’s guilt, despite the amount of time it took to resolve the case.

What happened on the night of the murder?

Daniela Tabares Maya had taken Serrano home the night of the event, because the woman had drunk too much. However, she didn’t expect that doing a favor would end her life forever.

The police of the area received a call at 5:55 a.m., through which a woman alerted about a lifeless body, which was inside a car that was right in front of the entrance of Serrano’s house.

Later, it was determined that the call was made by Yvonne Serrano herself, who initially claimed to have found the body when leaving her house for the gym, although she was not wearing sportswear at the time.

Later, Serrano changed her version, which happened several times. Even, in one of them, she said she had lost consciousness and woken up in her bed after having been at the World of Beer the night before. In another of her statements, she claimed to have woken up in the passenger seat of the vehicle next to Daniela, which led the authorities to increase their efforts to clarify the facts.

In the middle of the process, the Coral Springs Police found a shell of a 9 mm firearm on the floor of the passenger seat of the victim’s car and it was confirmed that the perpetrator had permission to carry firearms.

In addition, during the three-hour period between the murder and the call to the authorities, Serrano removed security images from her home from his cell phone and washed the clothes she had worn on the night that ended the life of Daniela Tabares Maya, originally from Cali, a young student of the Crime Scene career at a Miami university, according to the authorities.

Isabel Tabares, the victim's mother, said she watched as a jury spent more than two and a half days deliberating before reaching the guilty verdict.

“As a mother, she took everything from me,” Tabares said in Spanish. “They found her guilty. “Now we await the sentence.”

While Tabares knows she will never see her daughter again, she is hopeful that Serrano remains behind bars, where she can't hurt anyone else.

“It was a tragedy for everyone,” she said.

As for the fate of Yvonne Serrano, it was confirmed that she will be sentenced on August 12 and faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, although the judge has the option of imposing a less severe punishment.
