One dies after quarry collapses, another dies in car crash in Naivasha

The ongoing rains claimed the first victim in Naivasha after a quarry caved in killing a middle-aged man in the Maraigushu area of Naivasha.

During the incident, scores of other workers escaped death narrowly as the rains continued to pound the area, raising fears that more quarries could collapse.

A witness James Mwai said that a section of the quarry caved in and in the process, a boulder clashed on the victim killing him on the spot.

“The area has recorded heavy rains in the last week and this could have caused the accident and we have asked those working here to relocate,” he said.

Naivasha OCPD Stephen Kirui confirmed the incident adding that the body had since been collected and taken to the local mortuary and an inquest file opened.

Meanwhile, one person died and over 60 others escaped death narrowly after a bus destined for Kampala, Uganda lost control along the Nairobi-Nakuru before landing into a ditch.

During the early morning incident in Kayole, Naivasha scores of the passengers escaped with minor injuries while hailing the driver for saving their lives.

The accident occurred on the same spot where another bus driver lost control and killed over ten students and staff last year.

In the latest incident, the bus that was headed to Nakuru developed mechanical problems before ramming into two personal cars slightly injuring the occupants.

According to James Kabono from Naivasha Road Safety Group, the driver managed to veer the vehicle off the road ramming into a tree which led to his death.

He said that the driver and the conductor were seriously injured with the former dying while undergoing treatment at Naivasha subcounty hospital.

“The driver who unfortunately lost his life was the hero after directing all passengers seated in the front to go to the back before veering off the highway and hitting a tree,” he said.

OCPD Kirui confirmed the incident, adding that the other passengers escaped with minor injuries and were treated and discharged.

“We had an accident along the highway involving a bus headed to Kampala where we lost the driver but the other passengers are safe,” he said.
