Inside Nigeria

Struggle of Nigerian

By Gift Idundun Published about a year ago 3 min read

I would really like to create great awareness to the world about what we pass through in Nigeria. When I say we I am referring to people like me without connections non Hausa/Muslim.

So a month ago I applied for a federal Government Job (NDLEA) and we wrote the online Exam and the cut of make was set for 40% but for you to get a greater chance of your name coming out you are to score above 80% and I did lots of research on that exam stayed up late just to be able to pass the exam and on the day I wrote the exam I know I scored above the 80% requirement but unfortunately my name and most of us who are not from the north where not shortlisted because out of 3872 names that came out the Hausa/Muslim took over 98% of the list.

This is not my first time of applying for a federal government job in my Nigeria but because I have no body to assist me or I am not an Hausa I always end up not getting the job. Nigeria is a very difficult place to live because the inside discrimination is very high and it’s causing serious issues now with so many people committing suicide but it’s not getting to the news.

Nigeria government has proven several times that it’s not for everyone the poor are left to fight alone, you go to school and study so hard only for you to graduate and face reality of joblessness while the few government works available are given to the Hausa who have no education and then sending people like us into depression.

Nigeria is a place of constant struggle which most of us fight everyday to make it in life but end up frustrated and at the end of the day many who couldn’t continue end up going into various kinds of criminalise like yahoo yahoo also known as scam, pushing of hard drugs, prostitution and so all.

Our security sector in Nigeria is dead because they keep employing illiterates to take over all the jobs in Nigeria and all they know how to do is to harass innocent civilians and run away when they see real criminals.

Nigeria is a country where the source of your wealth is no longer questioned but you get to be celebrated immediately you become rich and be guided by the securities who are employed to protect the country, I remember one day when I withness a police man on uniform who is escorting a small boy in his SUV slapped an aged taxi driver because he blocked there car unknowingly to him.

Most taxi drivers, bus drivers and Keke drivers (local means of transportation) in Nigeria are graduates who struggled to get a job in Nigeria but could not get one so they have to going into such means of income just to provide food on there table and to take care of their family needs which is not even enough.

I am writing this now because I have become depressed and a shadow of myself, I am married with two kids and me and my husband lost our jobs same month and because the income was so small we couldn’t be saving from it and right now things are very tough and all the jobs we have been applying for has been turning us down not because we are not qualified but because we don’t have the right connections to get it, it’s reall frustrating now because of the kids who needs to be taking care of
