What Is Old?

Observations On these Memes

Internet Meme

I keep seeing memes like this showing things that people used, saw, heard or knew about in their past, and very often the term "old" is used as a derogatory term when applied to someone.

This is one of my pieces on the general subject:

and these are a few more:

This is just about these constant memes, which I don't mind seeing but I don't see being old as a problem and I am not too keen on the alternative to getting older.

The music is "Old" by Dexy's Midnight Runners, just because Dexy's are great.

So You're Old If ....

This almost seems to me as denigration of anyone who can remember things and items, including music, books, film and TV.

There are lists and if you tick off so many then you are designated old.

The other thing is, that these are often attempts to gather information about us, so we can be targeted by advertisers on social media.

I still play vinyl records, that doesn't make me old or stupid. When I am on the move I have a lot of music stored digitally and listen via Bluetooth headphones, so does that make me ancient?

When I connect with people online, or they connect with me, age seldom comes into play, although I seldom send friend requests out because I am seen as old and white and therefore a potential predator. I always wait for an invitation.

I remember having a black and white TV with two channels, I remember when all music was on vinyl or reel to reel tape. I remember 16rpm and 78rpm vinyl records (the first for spoken word I believe and the latter for singles).

Then you get T-shirts like this which are sold as fun, but just hammer home the belief that anyone over the age of (as young as thirty) is just a miserable old git, and to be honest some are, and take delight in being miserable.

I still act as though I am 18 though my body knows it is nearly for times that many years on this Earth. I am shocked when I see people who have decided their life has virtually ended because they are past forty (my girls are over forty) and make out they ache and can't move and have to be in bed by eight.

Often I am up past midnight (I wish I didn't need to sleep) and most days I am up and showered by 6:30 am. I don't like being too far out at night but am fine with a gig or night out in Newcastle or Gateshead as long as I can get home.

Again I have known people who have to have a nap each day after work. I nap if I am tired but can go for twenty hours if I need to (though not every day).

These are the sorts of lists that I am fine with, things that make your life better and make things better for those you love and know.

I am aged but rather than old, I would describe myself as sagacious. I know and have experienced a lot of things. I forget some things, but can always find the answers that I need.

Many people are amazed at the things that I know, and sometimes I am too.

I cannot do everything, but I try my best. My dad was a builder but I could never lay a brick wall properly.

I have had a rotary and push button landline, and my daughter Juliet forced one of her mobile phones on me. I didn't think I would keep it for long, but we know how that went for all of us. I am just disappointed we don't have teleportation yet, but I am sure that will be with us one day.

Thank you so much for staying me through this mind wander.

Another lovely mind wander Mike. I think trends like 'grumpiness' are code for good traits like 'caution' 'forethought' and 'balance'.... hmm

Not only do I know what it is, I still remember what it tastes like. I joke about being old and everything that comes with it, but in reality, I can still outwork many of the youngsters and was out there doing it on my side job until late last year. Yes, I need to refresh my memory occasionally, but I mastered the research tools a long time ago. A good read and quite relateable!

Oh, I know exactly what those are! I used them so much when I was younger. I was all about arts and crafts and probably glued one thing to another to another to another for the better part of, well, years. Great article, from one aged being to another. Here's to the journey. May the road stretch on a long while longer!
