Things That Happened Today

A Confessional

Introduction

This is going to be one of those pieces where I talk about things, but don't give examples. You may know what I'm talking about, or you may think you know what I am talking about but I won't let any secrets slip.

The music is "It Happened Today" by Curved Air, which is appropriate because it's about things that happened today.

What Happened Today?

Well over the last few days, I have had myself publicly tagged on Facebook as someone who knows about certain things and is the go-to person for advice on certain things.

This happens at work a lot, especially when there are problems, but in the Facebook / Vocal Groups in the past it seldom, if ever, happened. People are more concerned with sharing their latest creations rather than other's work, although in the Vocal Social Society and Voices in Minor (ViM) (Vocal & Mus'd) we have tried to encourage that, and at the moment there is a lot more sharing of others work.

Often this results in reciprocal shares which in turn is beneficial to all creators because that results in reciprocal reads, and you know what that means. This is an example of a weekly thread we run in the Vocal Social Society where we highlight stories by group members and non-members:

I know that many people value everything I do, but usually, the acknowledgements are given in private, and for some things that is the correct response. It is nice to feel appreciated because that does make you want to put effort into the things you are doing. This in turn benefits the people I try to help, although I can't always give them what they need.

I am often seen as an expert on subjects that I have little knowledge about, but in this digital world, I have access to my own knowledge as well as the whole of the internet, and I am good at finding solutions to issues and problems. If I can't I will at least point people in a direction to help them find the answer.

Sometimes getting noticed and credited can induce embarrassment, but it only happens because you have done something worthwhile and useful to people, and on Vocal that is very helpful in growing your audience.

Last week Dana Crandell recommended a story of mine in the Vocal Raise Your Voice post, and that resulted in a Top Story and this is only my third recommendation and second Top Story that has resulted, but it was the public endorsement and recommendation from Dana that made me really happy. I apologise, I have let a secret slip here but it is public and on Vocal.

Conclusion

Public recognition is a wonderful thing to get, and from Vocal that is shown in Challenge wins, placements and Top Stories. Some of the Facebook Groups also give shout-outs to their members for instance Voices in Minor (ViM) (Vocal & Mus'd) gives weekly one for example here

The Vocal Social Society has a weekly Dynamic Duo feature where contributors are highlighted and members are encouraged to check out their work, an example is here:

which incidentally features Dana and Thavien, but this shows that people are recognised and I think that is a very positive thing.

The Vocal Community has made me feel valued and in turn I want to make others valued. Sometimes I feel I don't do enough, but I know that what I do is appreciated.

As usual, this has wandered somewhat off track, but thank you for reading and I hope that it has given you some food for thought.
