UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson says corruption is "holding Ghana back!"

If someone tells you who they are, believe them. There are public Tweets and articles from Ghanians telling you about their corrupt behavior. Now the UK has made a statement on corruption holding Ghana back and Ghanians now are pretending to be saints.

Scamming and fraud are an everyday part of life in Ghana and they've always managed to blame this behavior on Nigerians. Well it's not the fault of Nigerians and frankly that's an old game, the blame game is getting very tired in Africa and around the world.

Ghanians seem to spend their days thinking that they can overcharge, scam and steal from the many foreigners living in the country as well as their own.

While living in Ghana, some how Bolt and other shared ride drivers figured out a way to overcharge people for their rides. They could some how increase your fair, even the shortest rides would turn go from 8 or 9 Ghs to 25 or 30 Ghs. Once I took a short trip to my local mall, the traffic was light, the trip was quick. He managed to increase the price by double. I knew something was wrong because the driver refused to srop by the front door.

He let me out in the middle of the parking area, there were no security guards in this area. He showed me his phone with the increased rate, he was screaming at me and he said look isn't this your name? He had no idea that I knew what the Bolt drivers screen was suppossed to look like, that wasn't it. I have no idea what scam he was pulling but I exited his car and refused to pay him anything. He drove off angry and I walked away.

Navagating Ghana with light skin and being a Black American, to me was the worst part of my life. Everyday, someone would insult me, shoot a photo of me, call me all sorts of names. But the over-charging when you're already paying so much money just to live in their country.

Police and immigration officers also looking for bribery money, they had jobs and incomes coming it. I did not. That's the worst part, they think you're rich and can afford to be scammed everyday. They think that American citizenship comes with a free check. Sadly many African Americans are pushing the move to Ghana on others without telling them the hardships of te scam life, the hate speech and the mentality that you're lower than them.

Perfectly said. Our politicians are our number one problem in this country. Is it not possible for UK to colonize again for the second time to manage the affairs of government.

Kwasi Asembi

You are not far from right. Our assets declaration regime is very weak and our politicians NPP/NDC have taken advantage of it and have exploited the state. Above all, we don't have proper separation of powers and everything is concentrated in the hands of the executives.

Stephen Kavi

The president himself is the corruption.

Wise Gardner

The whole system needs overhauling completely

Joseph Kpade

Clearing goods and vehicles at the Tema port is the highest corruption in the history of Ghana!!!!

Alfred Adedeme

It's now our culture n citizens don't see anything wrong with it. It's no longer worth competing for any position through display of skills n knowledge but rather its the highest bidder who takes it.

H-Yuman Charlie

We know. Our vice president spent more than $13 million dollars on his presidential primaries. The whole government is corrupt

The "massive uncontrolled corruption" that the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) lamented a few days ago, has caught the attention of the UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson who said the canker is holding the country back big time.

According to her, Ghana would make significant progress if not for corruption, which the GCBC said appears to have been legalized and is suffocating the country.

Citinewsroom.com reports Thompson as saying this among other things during a media interaction at the 75th birthday celebration of King Charles III at her residence.

“Corruption is one of the things holding Ghana back. It’s not only a problem in Ghana, but also a problem in many other countries. If all the money that comes into Ghana were used for the purpose for which it was intended, Ghana would be making faster progress,” the news website quotes her as saying.

In her view, the public perception of high corruption places Ghana in a bad light, pushing it up the corruption index, hence the need to address it.

Beyond corruption, Thompson also spoke about the 2024 general elections, pledging the UK’s support to ensure there is a peaceful, transparent, free and fair process.

“We have been working with the Electoral Commission for a long time. We’re also doing some work to help tackle mis/disinformation, which sadly has popped up in many elections these days,” she disclosed.

She expressed confidence that with the help of civil society and political actors, Ghana would carry out another democratic process devoid of rancour.

Ghanians will sit and lie that it's only those in positions of power while every foreigner has experienced the constant scams that are well known to come into your life daily in Ghana. Frankly it's disgusting and annoying to think of constantly being scammed or targeted for scaming and fraud in Ghana.

People are tired of it and their seems to be no end in sight for those living in the country.

Imagine if all the money coming into Ghana was used for what it was given for, this says all you need to know about life in Ghana. A country that is 60% under-developed and the lands minister admitted that 73% of the roads are either unpaved or in need of serious repairs. One can see this from the constant road demos and protests in the country.

Some people said the missed humanity, let that sink in for you! It's the number one thing missing from Ghana.

It's like the pockets of foreigners don't matter, it's almost like everyone thinks that millionaires are just flooding Ghana. I was always looked at as a person with money because of the stupity of thinking that a light skin person with an American accent is white and with that logic all white people are rich.

No matter what you say many Ghanians think that every foreigner in the country is rich and deserves to be scammed and cheated out of everything they have.

Ghana needs to be ranked higher for scamming and corruption, Ghana should be slapped with several warnings about their own citizens. The way Nigeria and Cameroon are targeted so should Ghana, they're failing the African continent and they need to be placed on as many fraud and corruption lists as possible, they're earned it.
