Buy your freedom

The reason you are working a 9–5 job is to buy your freedom. I have already discussed in a previous article why humans are so interested in freedom. It's important for you to understand that ultimately what you want out of your job is to get your freedom. As long as you don't earn while you sleep, you are constantly trying to buy that freedom. Definitely, you might love your job and what you do but after working the same thing for a decade or two, it gets tiring, especially when you are forced to show up every morning to ensure that things don't crash. 

Society has evolved in such a way that we all have to work to ensure its smooth functioning, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we like working or enjoy showing up to the same place for the rest of our lives. When you look at it with a little step back, you only work because you want to afford certain things or a certain lifestyle and ultimately do the things you want to do. This is exactly the freedom I am talking about here: the ability to do the things you want to do, which will be impossible if you didn't earn an income to buy you that freedom. 

What happens is that we sell our time in exchange for resources which can help us purchase the things we like. Before you even get to the point where you are trying to purchase your freedom, you have to first get past the point where you are just trying to survive. 

Prisoner of a paycheck 

I think it will be fair to say that we have become prisoners to a paycheck, and aside from those who are able to establish income streams that are automated, for the rest of us, our lives depend on that paycheck. 

My favorite types of people who aren't prisoners to a paycheck are those who were able to establish automated businesses; they are run by other people, and they literally have nothing to do aside from showing up to the yearly party. Such people just wait for a paycheck to show up at the end of the month; the founder benefits 😁. 

When I say automated business, I don't mean something working with AI or some computer program; I just mean a business that has little or no input to put in for it to function. Something that constantly produces income even when you sleep, that's the easiest way to buying your freedom. 

What freedom looks like 

Being free in this case isn't about you just sleeping all day long at home doing nothing. The easiest test to know if you are free is to ask yourself: if you took a 1-month break right now, or even a 1-year break from everything you are doing, will your life still be the same? For some persons, even a 1-day break could land them in hot waters for a very long period of time. 

When you get to that point of freedom, you are able to decide what you want to do with your time, mind, and resources. it's no longer dictated by another person or some circumstances; what that freedom gets you is the ability to control your reality, which is definitely not the case when you are reliant on a paycheck; basically, your life belongs to your boss. 

Is it even possible? 

Sure, it is possible to buy your freedom, so many people do it on a daily basis. The first step is realizing that you need to buy your freedom, literally. If you don't even realize that you are not free, then how can you aim for it. Most people think they love their jobs, and it pays well, so they have nothing to complain about. It's also important to acknowledge that some people enjoy being prisoners simply because of the consistency and security it provides, so this advice isn't for everybody. 

No matter how well your job pays or how much you love it, eventually a day will come when you will realize that you don't actually have control of your time, and you will get tired of selling your time and might want a different bargain. The question now will be if you can afford to break that contract with your employer. If you have a successful business, sure you can, but if you have nothing else automatically generating you income, then you wouldn't be able to.

How to buy your freedom 

Its quite straight-forward. There might be multiple options to explore, but the most popular and common method has always been to establish businesses that generate income. Others try to have a huge amount of savings by working for years (retirement pension) and many other methods. At the end of the day, you have to realize that you aren't free and work towards your freedom with a strategy because eventually the time will come when you won't be able or willing to sell your time anymore. you might want to give yourself a choice then.
