Fried Zucchini and a Sense of Normalcy . Second Place in Nourished Challenge. Content Warning.
“Don’t talk to Ulf,” I heard someone say as I arrived on the job site, “He was doing shots of NyQuil at the bar last night, and he’s in a bad mood.” I had heard of Ulf through coworkers, who played him up like some kind of indestructible gutter punk, the sort who could be found in cities in the 90’s, but which were a dying breed by that spring day in 2002. Ulf was in New York by way of the circus, by way of south Boston for Fashion Week.

I Want to Give the World Nachos. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge.
The Story: I have been incarcerated for nearly 22 years. Throughout this time, food has held a special kind of significance: food served by the prison is rarely filling, cooked by inmates who are more concerned with stealing anything good and filling their own bellies than they are with seeing that their fellow inmates are able to eat as well as they. On the rare occasions we are fed something decent, there is a rush of people trying to buy or barter for the "good tray." Thanksgiving and Christmas trays, with their extra portion of real turkey meat, rolls, and extra cake with white icing can be sold for as much as $10.

Nanny's Homemade Mashed Potatoes. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge.
The Story It was January 2004, the start of my second semester of my freshman year in high school. This particular school had an overcrowding problem, which meant that some classes were located in outbuildings and portable classrooms. Among them were all of the foreign languages the school offered (Spanish, French, Latin, German, and Russian), of which students were required to take two semesters’ worth of lessons in the same language to graduate.

A Meal For a Queen. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge.
I was in my 36th year of life and had returned to college to finish up the university degree that had been interrupted by a pregnancy and marriage while I was in my teens. My children were now teenagers and I felt I could finally put some effort towards bettering myself. It wasn’t an easy decision. I was married to an extremely jealous man who had clearly demonstrated that neither me nor the children were safe when his rage overtook him. This had led to my developing coping skills over time, skills that had very little to do with who I was an individual and much to do with keeping us all safe. I didn’t like the person I had become and I missed the one I had been as a child. I knew I could not continue living like I was. Returning to college was the first step in a journey to reclaim my self.

Chicken Parm and Chick Flicks. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge.
So, my wife of sixteen years and I met in college. She was a cute little brunette Accounting major by the name of Anna. We had started dating in the fall before, but now it was February, and readily approaching was our first Valentine's Day together as a couple. For me, it was not really that big of a deal, but for her? She had just casually informed me that I was her first ever boyfriend, her first actual relationship.

Campfire Battle Fodder. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge.
Above the roar of a crashing sea, high on the cliffs above Tintagel Bay, we latter-day warriors laid down our arms to watch the sun sink into the lilac horizon beyond Merlin's Cove. Battered and bruised, our armour dented, but our pride pulsing, the day's heat rose from us as a haze laced with chain oil, sweat, and patchouli straight into the salty-sweet air of a crisp and welcome night.

It's All In the Roux. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge.
Roux—a Salve for the Soul Growing up in New Orleans, which has a hodgepodge heritage of American, Spanish, English, and French cultures, it is no wonder French cuisine is favored. It's a no-brainer because it doesn't involve the brain—it's all about the tongue! Even before that, however, it begins from the very first cranial nerve, delivering those luscious smells.

Million Dollar Friend. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge.
Giving birth is a monumental endeavor, and one that’s not easily forgotten for a multitude of reasons. So is also the case with the circumstances and people that surround us during that pivotal part of our lives. Memories are made and shared and live long after those moments have dissipated into the spectrum of time.

Nuts to vegetarians. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge.
When it comes to eating meat, I stopped 40 years ago in 1983. I recall the last meaty meal I ate, mostly because it was a mistake, an oversight. Invited to dinner with some work friends I had neglected to tell them that I was a vegetarian. Completely forgot to say, that is, until a big bowl of steaming spag bol was placed in front of me. Appealing as it was, it seemed, to all the other guests, I had to steel myself to tackle it.
