The Bridge. Runner-Up in Microfiction Magic Challenge.
The bridge only went so far until it didn’t. The rusted spannings hanging in twisted steel over the river which coursed some hundred feet below. The ruined train tracks bowed outwards in shorn metal ribbons as if blindly seeking to connect again to the far beggared tracks. A thing yearning to be what it once was.

The Ram. Runner-Up in Microfiction Magic Challenge.
The ram had been discovered just before dawn when the shepherd was alerted by one of his bloodied guard dogs. The dogs were valiant, but the wolf was swift, and the deed was done. The ram had not yet mated with the ewes for the season. There would be no new lambs in the south field come spring.

Haven. Runner-Up in Microfiction Magic Challenge.
Seven days old. His achromatic eyes could barely see. We were, to each other, soft, living shapes. I’d known my daughter better. I often lay by her crib, holding her hand when she cried. Her cot death was silent; our hands were still touching in the morning.

Making Camp. Runner-Up in Microfiction Magic Challenge.
It had been a homestead, once. Now only the skeleton of the house remains, choked by weeds. It's as good a place to sleep as any, I suppose – hard to find someplace safe these days. There's too much danger in the world now. Too many dogs around.

It's Just How Things Have To Be. Runner-Up in Microfiction Magic Challenge.
Yesterday, I watched a time-lapse video of a sunset. I’ve seen so many real sunsets. The sun sinks farther and farther behind the horizon until it’s gone. Its light lingers for a bit, then fades to night. The video, for some reason- the angle, maybe- made it easier to see the truth, which is, of course, that the sun doesn’t leave us. We’re the ones who turn away, knowing life will be dark and cold without it, but we do it anyway because that's just how it has to be. And here I was blaming the sun all this time.
