Usually, we choose songs we like by the melody, the lyrics, and by the musical genre. I’m starting a series with songs from all kinds of genres going according to the alphabet. Here are songs with titles that begin with the letter R. Links will be posted below as we proceed through the ABCs. At the end, you’ll find the links to the songs with titles that begin with the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, and Q.

The song “Rag Doll” by American pop and rock band The Four Seasons is just one song that is a favorite of mine from this band. It is a great song to both just listen to and even dance to. The song was written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio and recorded by The Four Seasons in 1964. Gaudio said he was inspired to write the song after seeing a young girl whipping windshields in ragged clothes in the Hell's Kitchen area of Manhattan in New York City. It is a slow dance ballad. In 2010 WCBS-FM radio station in NYC rated “Rag Doll” as the number one song of all time, as voted by its listeners.

“Riders on the Storm” is an amazing and memorable song by the American rock band The Doors. They recorded and released the song as the second single from their album L.A. Woman in 1971. The song is known for being the last song Jim Morrison recorded prior to his sudden death in Paris, France on July 3, 1971. The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles charts. It was classified as a psychedelic rock, jazz-rock, and art rock song. The song was inspired by the country song “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend”. The lyrics to “Riders on the Storm” were written by Morrison. It is listed among the greatest songs by The Doors and remains a standard on classic rock radio playlists.

I have always loved this lively song “Ramblin’ Man” by the American rock band The Allman Brothers Band. It is the lead single from their album Brothers and Sisters from 1973. The song was written and sung by the band's guitarist Dickey Betts. The song is the inspiration from a 1951 song of the same name by American country singer Hank Williams. It became the band's first and only Top Ten single charting on the Billboard Hot 100 and Easy Listening charts. It became a hit on AM radio stations nationwide.

The song “Randy Souse Git” by the American pop-rock band The Monkees has always been among my favorite songs recorded by them. It has an awesome melody. This is the first song written by the band's drummer Mickey Dolenz in 1967. The song was featured on their album Headquarters and can be heard on their TV series The Monkees. The inspiration for the song came in 1967 when Mickey Dolenz and Micheal Nesmith attended a party in London, England thrown by The Beatles for The Monkees. Dolenz wrote about this party that was held at The Speakeasy Nightclub. The song is played by all four band members with Dolenz on vocals, drums, and timpani, Davy Jones on backing vocals, Mike Nesmith on guitar, and Peter Tork on piano and organ.

I hear the song “Red Red Wine” and the silky tones of American singer and songwriter Neil Diamond and I've got a smile on my face, turn up the volume, and hope I have a glass of red wine in my hand. The song was written and recorded by Neil Diamond and is featured on his album Just For You. It charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box charts. Diamond released a live version for his album Hot August Night.

“Remember When the Music” is a lovely and sentimental song sung by American singer and songwriter Harry Chapin. It is on his posthumously produced album of the same name that came out in 1987. It contained the same tracks as the album Sequel which became the last complete album released during Chapin's lifetime.

“Ring of Fire” is among my favorite songs by American country singer and songwriter Johnny Cash. The song is featured on his 1963 album Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash. It was recorded as “(Love's) Ring of Fire” by Cash's sister-in-law Anita Carter and is on her 1963 album Folk Songs Old and New. The version by Johnny Cash became one of the biggest hits of his career and remained at number one for a long time on the country charts. In 2010 the RIAA certified it Gold.

“Red Rubber Ball” is a nice pop song that I have always enjoyed recorded by the American rock band The Cyrkle. The song was written by Bruce Woodley from the Australian folk-pop group The Seekers and Paul Simon of Simon & Garfunkle. The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
