Juli Patchouli's June 2024 Miserablist Mish-Mash Playlist:

My Friend Juli Creates Brilliant Playlists. This Is Another

By Mike Singleton 🌜 Mikeydred πŸŒ›Published 3 days ago β€’ 3 min read

Introduction

My friend Juli is a music lover, DJ, Poet, Writer, Performer, Snake Owner, and Cat Lover and publishes playlists on Facebook. I suggested she put one on Vocal, which piqued her interest. Then I said I would put it together and credit her.

These fourteen songs are all her choices, I have not heard any of them so I will comment as I put this playlist together.

YouTube does not indicate where the videos are licensed to play so I try and choose the artist's or record label's channels in the hope they will be globally available.

Take a listen and leave comments, I'd love to hear what you think.

Thanks for this Juli.

This was the last one:

Miserabilist Mish-Mash June 2024:

VICE DEVICE - "Fractured Desire"

Relentless and sounding like it was recorded in a a big warehouse, which is no bad thing. Vaguely puts me in mind of a Martin Hannett production. This is a yes for me.

SELOFAN - "Almost Nothing" from "Partners In Hell"

Sounding like Nico over a properly produced early Human League backing, for a doom-laden slice of Goth excellence.

FRENCH POLICE - "Her" from "Bully"

Spacious echoes of Joy Division in this, though the slow vocals against the speed of the tune seem to mesh in perfectly. Another goody, thank you Juli.

H Ø R D - "Deliverance"

Dark and doomy synthesiser and reverbed vocals in the same galaxy as The Normal and Fad Gadget, I will be listening to this a lot more and checking H Ø R D out further.

ASH CODE - "Crucified"

Starting out sounding like you have been dropped into an abandoned factory years after it was closed by nuclear fallout, but some machine is still running, before being hit by a relentless storm reminding me of Dead Eyes Opened.

ARIEL PINK - "Haunted Graffiti" from "The Doldrums"

This is quite strange, like bubblegum pop put through a mangle then put in a washing machine on a too-hot wash resulting in a song that is still rather excellent.

VOID VISION - "Not Much Of Anything" (Alternate Mix)

Drum machine and electronica that works its way into your cerebral cortex like an infectious virus, and it will stay there for a long time after you have heard it.

MOTH - "Frozen Tears"

The video for the piece of Eastern European slice of menace is amazing, so I hope that you can see it. Again another slice of relentless Gothery chosen by Juli.

MUSHY - "Faded Heart"

Juli actually chose "This Morning" for her playlist but I could not find that in any form anywhere. "Faded Heart" is as gothicly monochrome as its accompanying video, with vocals that echo as though they were recorded in an oubliette.

VOLCANO THE BEAR - "Eleven"

Juli chose "11 Years Of Yes" but this confused me again so I have included "Eleven" which would not be out of place near Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica".

KARL KAVE - "Ghosts"

Slightly low key but the vocals do sound like a ghost trapped in a mirror.

BUZZ KULL - "Dreams"

Not the Fleetwood Mac song but here come threatening saw-like instruments with ghostly electronica flowing behind them.

THE KVB - "Hands"

Another monochrome video. This is an excellent slice of dark motorik, sound like it was made by a machine. It takes no prisoners and will not release you.

L’AN III - "Les Enfants"

This sounds very off-kilter, but an excellent challenging listen nevertheless.

Maybe a suitable end to this playlist..... then again maybe not
