How Did We Get Here?
I watched the funeral of my school friend’s son online this month, on Facebook. It took place at the same church I was first married in, and where both my daughters were christened. Her son was twenty-five years old, the same age I was when I married in that church. I watched it online, of course, due to the ongoing global pandemic.

I watched as they all stood around the kitchen table, gently sobbing. The littlest raven-haired girl spoke up and said “Mama, it ain’t right that she’s not buried yet. I heard Cecil say so out at the harbour today, while we waited for Papa to come in on the boat.”

My Reappropriation
The biggest regret of my youth is that I never recognized my own worth. If I could go back, I would tell myself to embrace those warm, melty and soft parts of myself, my flair for everything creative and poetic, and not repress those innate hallmarks to fit into society’s exoteric mould. That’s exactly what I would do.
