Music Is the Background of My Life
I grew up in the dark corners of Chicago. First the Westside, then the Henry Horner projects, finally the South Side, the worst part of town. I should have ended up a $7 crack whore with nine hundred kids scattered throughout foster care. Yet, I did not. Music made a difference to my soul when I was heading in the wrong direction. Music guided the major projects and decisions in my life.

A Fear of Flowers
Larkin was shaking with fear. A small black crate was sitting innocently in the middle of the marigold field. The marigolds were ridiculously oversized. Instead of being ankle-high, these flowers reached to her waist. Larkin believed walking a path with giant flowers on both sides was one of her challenges, but no, that would be too easy. Conquering her fear of plants was hard. Before coming to the castle, Larkin saw one plant in her entire life. Plants were so vibrant and green that her eyes avoided them.

Take a Big Bite Out of Life
Dirk looked at the stunning young woman lying next to him. He had enjoyed her thoroughly. Humiliating her throughout the night intoxicated him with pleasure. He remembered back two months ago when her innocence attracted him to her like a magnet. This woman servicing four men had been particularly exhilarating. He told her she would always be his baby by doing what he wanted. That was a bald faced lie.

Step Back; You Don’t Know Me Like That
“I like people too much or not at all.” Sylvia Plath I need a few things I’m shopping at a home improvement store. I’ve got a list of six items I need. My mask is on because I live in wild Florida. A home improvement store associate walks into my six-foot circle to ask me if I need help. I step back two steps; they step forward two steps. I wave my arms around my body in a windmill motion to illustrate that I need space. I tell her I’m looking for 116-inch blind slat replacements. Two of my slats broke. I’m trying to avoid replacing the entire sliding door blind. She checks; they don’t have them in that long length. “Thanks,” I answer, as I continue backing away. The associate follows me, telling me they could special order the replacements. “No,” I say and almost bump into a floor display, making my escape. She reaches to help me. I duck under her hands as I head into the outdoor furniture department.

Never Judge a Cat by Its Cover
My friend, Dawn, has a beautiful full-blooded Ragdoll cat, Thumper. The cat is a giant. He must weigh thirty pounds which draws attention to the cat. This cat is not a ball of fat; instead, he is a lean cat machine. All muscle. He has large shimmery blue eyes. Because the cat is a Ragdoll, he has a dark face mask with dark boots on all four feet. One-fourth of his tail is also dark. He looks like a big, beautiful, cuddly ball of black and white love. Thumper is not.
