Burlesque to Boudoir: Reclaiming My Body. Part 1
Spring 2017 I was 30 years old. I had just had a painful eye surgery that left me with stitches on the outside of my eye. I wore sunglasses at work because I was self conscious about it. That weekend, I went to a show, a burlesque show. I saw people of different races, body types, ages, and genders performing. I thought: If they can do it, I can do it. It turned out almost all of them got their start at a local amateur competition show. Within days, I was looking into it and entering the next month's show on Easter weekend. That was the year I gave up shame for lent. I'm not even Catholic.

Monster Woman
12/1/2021 I wrote about being a lemon, giving away pieces of myself, and screaming into the void. Bette On It: Weird Adolescence is a highly-fictionalized story inspired by distant memories of my teenage years. All of these pieces were supposed to be ways to share my feelings about how I got to be a 35 year old woman who identifies as a scarred, monster, loved, lonely, and hopeful. Anyone listening?

So Close, And Yet, So Alone. Part 2
Continued from Part 1 Tinka and Nestor walked out of the forest together and back into North Pomme to the Conclave. Tinka noticed the uncomfortable eyes on her in her deer form as they walked through the city, same as the morning, at least no one threw rocks this time. When they were inside the gates of the Conclave, she breathed a sigh of relief.

So Close, And Yet, So Alone. Part 1
A sequel to... It had been nearly a year since Nestor had continued his education with The Conclave of Alchemists in the city of North Pomme. Tinka had found herself a nice position within The Conclave too; functioning as a sort of ambassador between the alchemists and the beings of the woods. She had certain protections in both places in both of her forms, and enjoyed the level of freedom and responsibility offered to her. She was a selkie of simple means and the Conclave appreciated the work she did. They let her keep a robe and her pelt in the garden shed under enchantment lock as she needed. Most of the time she didn't lock it. She had already scared off most of the student alchemists with her behaviors and Nestor only confirmed more disturbing rumors about her. Most selkies were considered desirable, sexy creatures; after the last year, most people looked at Tinka like demon to be respected and not insulted. Tinka and Nestor were bonded by blood, but the fun game of respect and a little fear among The Conclave went both ways. Nestor had developed an aggressive attitude about his spot in the laboratories, a favorite spot in the library, and the rumor on how he was admitted was never made clear to anyone. For this, he became known as 'The Cruel.' When people saw the pair in the Conclave, they would part in their path for them, even if they were laughing and joking. It was a wonderful change of pace from the years of skittish fear she had lived in for years in her deer form in the woods.

Renaissance Festival War Stories Aug 28/29, 2021
Weekend 2 Aug 28/29, 2021 At the end of the day Saturday, I found the young gentleman artist who drew the riddlers last week. Turns out, he's apprenticing with another artist at fest. He says she captures the soul like no one else and he's hoping to learn how to do what she does as well. I tell him that what he did and showed us last week was so special and touching to me and gave him a four-leafed clover. It was an honor to be his subject. He said we are a great group to use to learn from because we are both animated on stage, and we don't move from our spots much, so we work well as drawing subjects. Kicking myself for not getting his name. Now that I know where to find him, I certainly will next week.

Tales of Bette: Reunited 2020 Part 4
Continued from Part 3 November 26, 2020 It had been over a month since Bette and Mark reunited in person and saw each other in person for the first time in 16 years.
