XOXO Part 3- One Day At A Time
“One day at a time.” I have heard that saying so many times studying substance abuse through college; heard it a lot in a court program that I was forced into at the age of 21 (I had a few rough teenage years but thankfully I was able to erase that part of my life; this, however, I couldn’t be so lucky). They speak of taking one day at a time because the pull of addiction is so strong that even making it through the day is an accomplishment.

Searching For The Reason Why
Murderer. Serial killer. Sociopath. There are so many different words for people who take the life of others. For me though, there is so much more behind those words. It is not always about who killed someone but the why behind it all. Why did the preacher's wife Mary Winkler shoot and kill her husband Matt? Why did Casey Anthony kill her two-year-old daughter Caylee? Why did Zach Adams murder nursing student Holly Bobo? Why did Jeffery Dahmer start raping, killing, and eating other men?

XOXO Part 2: The White Picket Fence Wasn't So White
The feelings of anger have slowly begun to decrease; I guess. Or at least I think so until I am so unnerved it takes an hour to lessen the shaking. My mind continuously plays back in increments the twisted and dark attraction between us. Anger so large that before this, I couldn’t fathom empathizing with. I’ve loved this man for shit; almost 17 years.

Love Isn't Supposed to Hurt
“I HATE YOU!” My heart rates accelerating with each childlike shriek and I remind myself this is temporary, and exhale any negative feelings for a whole 4 seconds. 5 minutes later I hear myself say “You don’t know what you're talking about!” And instantly; the shame that washes over me is bittersweet; a terrible feeling but affirmation that I still have emotions at all.

CTE Leads to Murder- Aaron Hernandez Spotlight
My 6 year old son Keller asked me today if he could play football like the character I dressed him up as for “hero day” to present to the class. The unmistakable 12 on the back of his too large jersey that he wears it with such joy. Now, I already know that Keller will not get a lot of compliments on his hero choice because this is not New England and people hate winners. #SorryNotSorry. Stop. He didn’t cheat. Shhh. But seriously, the Patriots have been no stranger to scandal; the G.O.A.T and even Bellechick facing scrutiny for cheating and hookers. However, the biggest scandal of the Patriot’s is the NFL prodigy that turned stone-cold killer and then killed himself in a Florida penitentiary almost 3 years on June 17, 2013, after being arrested and charged in connection with the shooting death of Odin Lloyd; a semi-professional football player that was with the all-star at a strip club in Miami Florida the night he was killed close to Hernandez’s sprawling mansion. I heard that Odin was actually the boyfriend of Hernandez’s fiancé’s family member, I don’t know if that was confirmed or not. Although he hadn’t even had time to get booked in before Bellechic was Donald Trump in the '90s and publicly fired him within like 2 hours I think. Pretty much every New England Patriots was devastated. I mean, he and Brady were heading to the Super Bowl that upcoming season. He had just signed a 40 million dollar contract extension, the largest NFL payout yet. While the jury trial prepared the Pats fans were all in mourning. It was almost that same feeling as when Michael Jackson was arrested in the '90s. Was he guilty? No, that’s impossible.

I've Fallen in Love with a Violent Offender
“You are not a rehabilitation center for poorly raised men” is probably one of my absolute favorite sayings of all time. Unfortunately, just like how to do your taxes my high school failed to teach me how to spot relationship red flags but have no fear my friends; I have seen all the red flags by now but then again, I am old. I think that this is a saying that should be framed in the visitation rooms of prisons, but even if it were posted; would it even matter?

Killer Kids & The Justice System
Kids can be cute; I have 3 that are pretty adorable. I mean, they throw a lot of shade for humans under the age of 10 but that is about it. The teenage years are supposed to get a little “rough” but I can’t imagine any of my children ever killing someone. Unfortunately, though, there are some children that kill and there is a LOT of controversy over what should be done with them regarding punishment.

The True Crime Obsession
The year is 2001. I am 12 years old. I can see the book sitting on my mother’s nightstand. Hardback. I know it must be pretty damn special if it is a hardback. Right, when she walked in from the store with it this afternoon, the first thing she said to me came out like a double dare; “you are NOT reading this one.” Reading is the only escape from my pretty crappy childhood, and also one of the fondest and most vivid memories I have of my mother. I read anything I could get my hands on at this point, and the middle school library was getting a little “kiddy” to me if you catch my drift. My mom didn’t tell me what I could and couldn’t read, she encouraged it, gloating to everyone who would listen about my willingness to read adult books. Hardback AND I am not allowed to read it? Something was up, and I had to get my hands on it; I mean, she practically double dog dared me.
