The Golden Adventure of Ritz
Hi. My name is Ritz. I am a fluffy golden retriever. I love to sleep and fetch and chew on toys. But the thing I love most of all is swimming. My breed was made to swim through the water to retrieve ducks. I don't think I've ever retrieved a real duck before. I did have a toy duck when I was a young puppy that I thought was real for a long time. I chewed and chewed on him and I didn't understand why he kept squeaking. Then, finally, I tore him open and I found fluff inside. Fluff! My humans tricked me! All that time I thought I was being a hero, bringing down a mighty, mighty duck. Anyway, I digress. I've never retrieved a real duck, but I do love to retrieve tennis balls when my humans throw them into the water.

When I Look at the Stars, I am a Traveler Third Place in Landscape Mode Challenge
Out of the window of an airplane. No one had ever told me that this was the perfect vantage point for viewing the stars. On my right, the man next to me was asleep, somehow, slumped over with the airplane-provided pillow under his head and airplane-provided blanket draped over him. I had spent the better part of two hours trying to get those airplane provisions situated in a comfortable– or comfortable enough– way to let me sleep... with no luck. Sleeping on the plane was a challenge too great for me. But I didn’t mind anymore. Because I had opened my window. About two hours before, I had closed it as part of the equation that was supposed to equal sleep. I followed every step of that equation but could not get it to yield the expected result. I should have known. I’ve never been any good at performing equations. Looking with wonder. That’s what I’m good at.

Caramel Swirl Frozen Yogurt, AKA I Don't Want to go to the Store to Buy Ice Cream
While the grocery store is one of the few places we're still allowed to visit, I have been trying to limit my trips. So when I found myself craving ice cream but was stocked up on all of the other food essentials, I had to improvise.

How I was able to see the Northern Lights in MichiganThird Place in Outdoor Shots Challenge
The Aurora Borealis has always fascinated me, but I imagined I would have to travel to Alaska, Norway, Iceland, or some far off, far North region to see it. I live in Illinois, so those destinations all seemed a little bit insurmountable. It wasn't until I was staying in a cabin in Northern Michigan when the thought occurred to me, and I decided to do some research. It turns out, Michigan's Upper Peninsula is one of the best places in the United States to see the Northern Lights, besides, of course, Alaska. If you, like me, dream of seeing the dancing lights in the sky, stay tuned for a few tips.

We Had to Evacuate from Italy
I arrived in Rome in January to begin my last semester of college, a semester that I would spend abroad in the beautiful city of Rome. Early on, I heard news that my University had to evacuate the students who were studying in China because of the coronavirus outbreak. This was the first time I had heard of coronavirus.

A Shot in the Dark: My Crazy Night Sky Photography StoryTop Story - July 2018
Basically, this is the story of a lucky shot. To begin, let's go back a few years. First of all, I am far from a pro-photographer. I shoot on a DSLR, for which I only have one lens. But I am an aspiring photographer. Over the past year or two, I have been learning more and more about photography, not to mention falling in love with it. Also, I am a stargazer by nature so night sky photography has always intrigued me. I remember being in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan a couple years ago, gazing mesmerized at the star-filled sky. This was not long after I bought my first DSLR, and I figured I could use it to snap a quick photo of the beautiful sky. I turned it on and pointed it towards the sky, in auto mode. To my dismay, the blurry picture that resulted hardly captured any of the millions of pinpoints of light I could see with my eyes. This was my first experience with "night sky photography."
