Darkside Drive creates a distinct take on 80’s goth and darkwave music.
From the ashes of bands forced off the road during lockdown, three musicians from across the country united to create a spark of an idea that lit the fire that was to become Darkside Drive, the flames of which burn bright in their creativity. The band has created a distinct take on 80’s music, goth and darkwave. The songs are a poignant look behind the curtain of suburbia and delve into the darker side of life. The band is busy writing and releasing new material, and looking to go on tour towards the end of the year. Vocalist, Steve Burden, took the time to answer our questions.

Suburban Sound Machine
Suburban Sound Machine has emerged from a group of exasperated musicians, locked in their homes, who needed to get their musical mojo’s back. Completely remote, due to lockdown restrictions, they recorded and released their first collection of songs in May of 2021. Now the band is able to finally get together in person, they are jamming the songs, preparing to go on tour and writing new material. The band has an unashamedly retro style that is deliberately multi genre, reflecting the diverse musical interests of its members. The songs take in influences such as David Bowie, Roxy Music, The Kinks, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Blur and even a touch of Miles Davis. The songs have poignant lyrics, taking an amusing, affectionate and sometimes melancholy look at middle class, middle English life. The first new single The Boy From Croydon came out in January, and now Perfect Life is out! At least 2 more singles in the pipeline...

AHVE (ah-vey) - a euphoric moment or a sudden moment in euphoria
May I ask how you arrived at your artist’s name? Give us the scoop Well honestly, I just made it up. I knew I didn’t want to use my government name because I danced professionally for a long time and people knew me by my government name and I didn’t wanna get pigeon holed to being just a dancer, so I said I wanted something short and sweet and creative and something I could give life and meaning to as a recording artist.

Does It Make You Feel Better ?
Inspired by recent experiences Joshua Turchin had with former friends who were bullying him, Does it Make You Feel Better explores why bullies feel the need to put people down in order to make themselves feel better. Through writing this song, Joshua learned that the root of bullying stems from the bully’s own insecurities. “As someone who constantly endeavors to lift up and provide opportunities for others, it just didn’t make sense to me why I was being targeted. I hope those who bully others look inside and think about why they needed to put someone down to make themselves feel stronger.” Does it Make You Feel Better is co-written with the incomparable Victoria Shaw, known for writing such songs as The River with Garth Brooks and John Michael Montgomery’s I Love the Way You Love Me among others. Recorded at M & I Recording Studios in NYC, Shaw also co-produced the song with Rocco Fiorentino.
