Great Smoky Mountain Train Ride
Gray clouds loomed thick and low over the valley. An autumnal rain beat down without remorse, turning the picturesque Smoky Mountains in North Carolina into a beautiful scene worthy of the most epic tragedy. The darkened afternoon added a certain foreboding to the setting.

Frozen in Time
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. As the light suddenly appeared, a flurry of snow rose from the ground, swirling angrily. Eerie music filled the air in the same second. Trees, bare with the winter scene, began to sway and move.

Chocolat
I'd initially written this story as part of the Chocolate Cake Challenge last summer, but couldn't shorten it cohesively to fit within the allotted word limit before the challenge ended. However, I credit that challenge, and thus this story, to breaking the writer's block that remained stubbornly in place for over 20 years. Though I don't write as well as I used to back then, I am writing again and it feels fantastic.

Summer means a lot to me: swarms of bug attacks if I'm outside for longer than three seconds; sweaty as soon as I step foot outside; longer days; more reading light; open windows (until it's time for the aircon to come on); froggy pool/sprinkler time with my son; burning like a lobster if I forget the sunscreen; brushing my dog every other day and filling grocery bags with hair; and, s'mores.

Breaking the Curse
"There weren't always dragons in the Valley," Sam said. A great wind picked up at that moment, sending fallen limbs and leaves swirling in the air, dancing and dipping until finally disappearing over the edge of the cliff. The trees of the surrounding forest bent and swayed wildly, but fortunately did not uproot or break.
