When There Is No Path To Tread
I walked out of my door just before dawn. This far off the main roads, the plows were unlikely to reach us for hours, if they even got to us today at all, and the neighbours wouldn't be up trying to dig out their cars and stoops for a little bit yet either. The world seemed to be at peace in stark contrast to the howling wind and blowing snow we'd had the night before. Everything was coated in a white blanket, glinting in the rising sun's light, with no evidence of any roads or paths to lead anywhere or towards anything.
The B&B Bear
I haven't always lived at this Bed & Breakfast. Once upon a time, I traveled with a young child, rarely leaving their side. A beloved teddy bear to keep them company, both at home and away. I came here with them on a vacation ten years ago, but unfortunately, I didn't leave with them. Left behind on one of the tea tables on the porch, I was found by one of the housekeepers hours after my child friend had left.
The Cracked Teacup
It's time for the first Author Avengers piece of the year! This month's prompt was selected by Author Avengers founder, Lou Yardley: A broken teacup, carefully mended with gold, becomes a symbol of resilience and hope. Due to some time and energy constraints this month, I opted for some free verse poetry over a prose piece.
2024: Putting Myself Out There and Clearing My Plate
Happy New Year! 2023 is now behind us, and I can’t help but say “good riddance”. It was a rough year for me, and I know I’m not the only one who felt that way. Mentally, emotionally, financially, and creatively 2023 felt like the year I hit several new low points. I’m all too happy to close that book and look toward 2024 with more motivation and optimism (especially after finally taking a proper and much-needed vacation last month).
The Christmas Village
I wrote this piece as part of a monthly prompt challenge from the Author Avengers group I'm in on Ko-fi and Discord. You can see a list of all the pieces written for the December 2023 prompt here. This prompt for December was: In the dark of night, you hear a voice: the voice you most want to hear in the world, and the one you know is impossible to be hearing again.
Steam Next Fest Wrapup
If you aren't familiar with it, Steam Next Fest is a weeklong event featuring hundreds of free demos of upcoming video game releases. The most recent Next Fest event took place from October 9th to 16th and while I didn't get to check out as many games this time as I have for previous events, I did still check a few off my list. I'll definitely be checking out a few of them when they release in the future!
The Nighttime Visitor
I can hear the growling and the sounds of something scratching at the doors and windows from the outside, but I don't dare go take a peek. Though I am curious, I don't want to draw the creature's attention. After several nights of this and several days of finding the claw marks on the house's siding and the large footprints in the yard accompanied by a strong sense of something watching me from the woods, I don't need to know what it looks like to know that I don't want to mess with it.
