With a Little Help
ThunderCat was so cute in the local shelter’s Facebook post. I’m always a sucker for old dogs, and my local shelter was looking for a fospice for an older shih tzu mix. She was in good health, but couldn’t be adopted out because she wasn’t spayed, and she couldn’t be spayed because she had a terrible heart murmur. She needed a home full of love and care until the end of her days, and I was happy to do it.

The Downed Plane
It had been a tumultuous day in Dar es Salaam. While the planned focus of the summit was supposed to be peace in Burundi, the group quickly shifted to conversation about the Arusha Accords, which had been signed by the government of Rwanda and the rebel force Rwandan Patriotic Front in an attempt to end the Rwandan Civil War. The Rwandan president, Juvénal Habyarimana, was criticized for dragging the implementation of the peace process out, and for heightening the racial tensions in the country. Burundian president Cyprien Ntaryamira was especially incensed, as hostilities in Rwanda could easily overflow into his own neighboring country.

Conquering Perfectionism with Paint
There are few things in life that bring as much universal joy to people of all walks of life as animals. Pets are strange creatures; they live in the house with us and can’t talk to us, but we love them unconditionally. My own life is full of animals, from chickens to horses to a pack of dogs. We celebrate their birthdays, enjoy their shenanigans, and mourn their passing. Animals are a staple of our lives. I haven’t yet met a dog I didn’t fall in love with instantly.

The Heart of an Old Dog
She was so tiny in her shelter photo, huddled up on a blanket. A perfect white ball of senior toy poodle, abandoned after her owner had died and the children didn’t want to take her on. They had brought her to the shelter to have her euthanized, but the shelter vet determined that she still had life in her, and so the adoption coordinator talked them into signing her over for the “fospice” program.

Criminal Koala
I believe we are all masters of trivia. We all pick things up from simply existing in society, and many tidbits remain with us whether we want them to take up space in our brain or not. I am fairly certain that when I am 90, I will still remember that Jeremy Irons was the voice of Scar in “The Lion King” (which has the added irony that I have NO idea who Jeremy Irons is and could not pick him out of a line-up). In grad school in New Jersey, I impressed my friends at bar trivia by knowing that earthquake are measured on the Richter scale; but having grown up in Washington State, this was a fairly common topic of conversation.
